yeah just take out the battery when you have it plugged in, mines plugged in 90% of the time, just with the batt out

So there is no problem at all or it won't mess with the main board functions at all

Why would it? Its designed to use an AC adapter even for extended periods. Ive had notebooks on for months.

You might notice the power brick gets hot but thats normal.

PS. Per Marks I (think)it is also a good idea to discharge battery to 40 per cent and store in a cool place.

You don't have to drain the battery. It won't keep charging if it's in there, I've had mine connected to the AC power with the battery in there pretty much constantly.

I also just use my laptop on AC without taking the battery out for extended periods of time. One thing I've noticed about Asus is that their battery charging techniques are better than other manufacturers, ie: they don't "top up" the battery once it hits 99%, my computer waits until it hits 95% and then charges it up. It's better for the battery in the long run.

I always use my G73 without the battery in while I am at home. On my previous laptop, I killed the battery prematurely by leaving it in even while I was plugged in. It was killed due to the heat, my machine was always warm and the battery was always warm. Heat = Dead Battery.

Just be sure to cycle your battery once a month to different levels and then store it around 50-60% in a "cool" place.

I received my G73 last Feb and have never used it with the battery, ever. I just checked the change when I got it and then took it out and put it in storage. Everywhere I use this notebook has power outlets, so there is no need to add unneeded weight in the backpack.

    interesting thread !
first off all this baterry can't do too much...if it will last at least 1:30h i would be happy
personally i have never took out the battery when i first got the laptop
and most of the time 80% i have it plugged but now when i saw this thread it made me think
maybe i should take out the baterry while plugged in hmm what do you think ?

i leave the battery in all of the time.

i use it once in awhile when i'm watching tv or whatever. and i don't think leaving it in is going to ruin the battery any faster than if you take it out. if your laptop is getting that warm you might want to look into why.

also the battery gets warmer when you're using it then it does when it's just sitting in the computer at full charge.

    and....it makes a handy UPS..... :)

I agree to this. You don't have to run your battery till hard shutdown due to power loss. When running on battery, you should use Power4Gear Battery Saving mode. When you use High Performance or Entertainment, it eats a lot of power from the battery wherein high power consumption leads to more heat dissipated. As more heat dissipated by fans/vents, the more the battery gets hot. The battery gets hot too when it drains a lot of power when not in battery saving.

Thus more the battery gets heated, the faster it decreases its life span. Think of your battery as a free UPS. If you're near an outlet, remove the battery and connect the AC. When you need to move location, connect the battery again then remove it again if you would like to stay again on an outlet for long periods of time.

I believe battery conservation is a bit of a religion here in this thread. ;)

The battery protection built into the BIOS is more than adequate to protect the Li-Ion battery. As for the heat dissipation from the rear vents overheating the battery, well, I'll reserve my skepticism. As stated earlier, when the battery is above 94%, it will not charge the unit, reducing the wear on the unit. So, if you plug it in all the time, you are not stressing the battery at all.

I believe the best argument for removing the battery is to make the laptop lighter. :D

i am going with the simple logic
the more you use it the less baterry life you will have

and btw it is still heavy without the baterry :)

    +1 to this!
Your battery is going to live unless you do something stupid like test how waterproof it is. There are engineers who do all this worrying for you.

if you are traveling often i agree with you
but if you have it plugged 90% of the time :)

What is this thread all about?

Running the laptop on AC without the Battery?? what for? save the battery from wear?? not gonna happen. Li-ion batteries still have wear over time even if they are not into the unit...

A cool feature on this computers is that they do not charge the battery to the 100% thus reducing even more wear over time.

My old Dell laptop... 4 years old, the one I'm using at the moment. I never removed the battery of it... and its working fine. possibly less than 80% of the original capacity on the battery charge capacity but hey that's 4 years and several charge/discharge cycles later...

weight wise... the laptop its quite heavy by itself, wont make much of a difference...

I don't see any issues with leaving the battery on the unit at all times, I think is easier to get the battery damaged if you moved it around often since there is more risk of dropping/breaking/getting it wet/loosing it than if you leave it into the laptop.

    experience makes it :)
and btw when you have it plugged on baterry after it reaches 100% do you unplug it so it can drain out all of it and then plug it again to recharge to 100%?

Laptops these days have battery protection. For example, mine is at 95-99% all the time so I'll have my charges for when I need them.

So if its connect to the AC Adapter i should disconnect the battery and store it away, because of the heat and the risk and a dead battery.

    that's my logic :)
like i said i have it 90% of the time plugged so i am sure it's better for the baterry taking it out :)
this is my 3 day using it without batery :)

That's what you got from all the replies? Not sure where you got the dead battery risk idea from.

Do it if you want to, but remember - the battery is degrading whether it's installed or not, the G73's cooling system doesn't put much heat on the battery, and the modern charging system for the Li-Ion battery does not over-charge the battery.

I always leave my battery off 99% of the time at home. I ALWAYS have it plugged in the A/C adapter. I know for a fact this wont cause any issues. Technology is just like that.

I guess you can leave your battery on while having it plugged 24/7, but i dont do that as the last laptop i had plugged in 24/7 with the battery on crapped out on me. The battery life went from 2hrs to 20 mins in under a year.

Maybe it was just a hardware thing, but it got me paranoid so i dont do it anymore.

i owned 3 PC's but this is my first laptop and i am not familiar with all of the things .Maybe i am skeptic about this but a lot of people told me that they were using their laptops always plugged in the AC with the baterry IN and after some time their baterry couldn't last 15 minutes
ok i know that ASUS maybe had a better tehnology not always charging it , the colling is good so the baterry won't warm ... but still

j00zl33t where do you keep your baterry? some storage cold box or else?

    p.s just read number 1 :)

Having repaired a few laptops in the past, I'd say most of them last 5-10min on battery. The laptops were only 1-2 years old. What did the users do with it? They kept the AC adapter in 24/7 with the battery in it. I'm sure it varies from laptop to laptop as to how over-charge protection works. Though I'm almost certain that heat will kill the battery. So... taking it out keeps it cooler, thus lasts longer even if it degrades by itself.
