In order to do that you would need to output USB to another external video card device and then out to the monitor.

    Something like this, LINK.

    thank you sir!

any idea why the 10.1 cats would overload the vga port on the G73 (Im guessing it was the 10.1 cats, since that is the only thing that changed between the time I attached the monitor on the 9.12 cats and the spark burn down issue).

I think you may have just had a momentary short, kinda of a one-time occurrence.

    Also note on that product:

    supported display graphics xga (1024x768), svga (800x600), sxga (1280x1024), sxga+ (1400x1050), uxga (1600x1200), 1152x864, 1280x960, 1280x800, 1440x900, 1280x768, 1680x1050

This isn't a question of whether or not the g73 can show video over USB, it's a question of whether or not your monitor has this functionality.

Sounds like you had a short caused by dust, hair or moisture. Quite likely this was on your VGA cable.

It also should be noted that it's not a good idea to hot plug a VGA port.

Well, to answer DCX's questions, yes, the Phillips Brilliance has USB functionality, (it came with a USB port at the back, along with your standard 2 way usb cable).

I always use a plastic cap on the VGA connector of the monitor, when I'm not using it. So chances are slim that it was dust or hair. Also, the latop's vga port was clean, since I usually clean out the G73 myself twice a day.

Right after the spark incident, I connected the external monitor with the my Acer 5535, and it worked without any sparks or anything else.

On the point of supported resolution, the Phillips 22" suports upto 1680 * 1050 resolution, and the day before the incident I was cloning my monitor at something like 1440 * 1050 on the 9.12 cats.

To answer Kalim's question, indeed, hot plugging is never a good idea, guess I will be more careful the next time around.

That product was more of an example than a recommendation. ;)
