So I've been running my G73jh-X1 for about a year now with no problems until this past week.
The problem: PSOD while playing video games.
When it started: Decided to do a clean Win7 x64 install. Updated all my drivers including the Radeon Mobility HD 5870. This is when it started crashing on me.
I've never had this problem before, unlike a lot of other users I suppose (after searching the internet a bit, discovered this was an early problem for a lot of users.).
Does anybody know the most stable driver for the Mobility 5870? I tried the most up to date OEM driver, failed. Most up to date Xtreme-G driver, failed.
I know for certain that before my format, I wasn't using the most up to date driver, I didn't see any need to update it since it was running great.
And if this is truly the end of the line for my laptop, how does their RMA work? They don't make the x1 anymore, I'm pretty sure. So I'm not sure what I'd get in return if it really has died.
Thanks in advance.

HAve you updated the VBIOS to one of the versions listed here?
http://pcaudio.ath.cx/
I am using the second Vbios listed (modded for lower timings...) there and 11.4 from that page without any issues.
If it still PSOD's with the Vbios update, it may be a hardware issue according to the OP in this thread: (VII)

Thanks to Chastity and Hellcry for their efforts. -
Currently it seems to have been resolved. I found an old Mobility driver.
Version: 8.680.0.0
Date: 11/18/2009
And I currently have the 213 bios.
Another question, does the turbo boost install increase performance? I always thought that most were just widgets or apps to show what was being utilized and didn't really add to the CPU's abilities.
*edit*
I'm going to try the Vbios upgrade and try the latest Mobility driver and see if the problem continues. If not, I'll roll back to this working driver. I'll report the outcome in a bit. -

Turbo Boost is just a sidebar gadget that shows you how fast the cores are running.
It's just a monitor app, the actual turbo boost functionality is there with or without it. -
I installed the same Vbios and Mobility driver as you JOSEA, and it seems to be doing the trick. Ran Furmark for 5 min with no PSOD. Thanks a lot man.
Also, I've been looking around and it seems that repasting the GPU seems to be helping people out by up to 20c on full load. This is really tempting. -
I think your issue is a GSOD. (vertical lines).
Psod as far as I know is fixable only with a RMA. -

Yeah, funny. As I was reading over this and reading other posts. I realized I had put the wrong acronym on the post. It's a GSOD, and it appears to be gone.
Now I just have to find if there is a good photo guide on repasting the g73jh -

Very good repaste guide here with pics: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...um/527654-newbs-guide-repasting-your-g73.html
Make sure to read all you can from the cooling section here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...hreads-read-before-posting.html#g73jh-cooling -
Awesome, thanks for that.
Yeah, just ordered my IC7 compound. My GPU at peak is running 68c idle and about 92c peak. So I'll be repasting for sure.
You've both been repped up. Thanks for all the help. The reason I keep coming back to this forum community. Best on the internet.
Is my G73jh-x1 dying? :\
