...or should i wait half a year more or is the price drop not going to be so significant for 6 months? how about 12 months?
thanks!
EDIT: 128 GB

just upgrade it whenever you like. there's no end waiting for a price drop. I did upgrade mine 2 months ago. The installation can be frustrating, but the overall performance boost wont let you down.
-
if you really need it then go for it
i am waiting to drop the prices -
i dont really need it now , but my Win7 is acting up on me and it looks like i'm going to have to do a fresh Win7 reinstall, and i want to use this opportunity to do it on an SSD drive, killing two birds with one stone
Now i just have to find out how to do a fresh install on SSD, my head hurts just thinking about it, cause i don't know how to do anything like that.... -
If you really want an ssd then you should get one now and buy an older and more reliable model such as the Intel X-25m. It's not quite as fast as some of the newer SSDs but it is more reliable than most and it's based on the older longer lasting 34nm nand. The newer 25nm nand is less expensive and higher capacity but the trade off is it has far fewer RE cycles. Theoretically, with heavy use, an SSD might only last a few years before it wears out.
-
Fact: computer components will continue to drop in prices tomorrow, next year, and the next. SSDs are no longer 'bleeding edge', so the price is reasonable. Buy one now!
-
When I got my first SSD my precise first thought was why-oh-why did I wait so long to do this. No single computer upgrade in over 25 years of computer tweaking has made a more perceivable speed gain in any computer I've ever owned. And I'm not exaggerating the tiniest bit. Everything about your computer will seem faster. Today, right this moment, I own two desktops and three laptops. Every single one of them has an ssd hard drive in it, even the lowly netbook.
-
well not everything will be fast ...
just the stuff you have on the SSD
windows and applications -
-
I can barely tolerate PC's without SSD's any longer. They definitely feel slower over-all, there's no escaping that. I stand behind what I said, nothing I've ever purchased made my computer seem quicker than an SSD. -
anyway still expensive for me
60GB more than 100 euros at my place so i will wait -
yeah i know what you guys mean, i recently got myself a MacBook Air, it comes with an SSD drive and it is fffffast, i only wish my G73 was as stable as this thing.
-
My G73 was every bit as stable as any Macbook air and a heck of a lot faster... Cost less too, a ton more performance for your money. But I do like the Air very much also.

before i had an ssd, g73 is a just gaming rig for me. It is powerful when gaming, but when browsing the web or launching applications, it is not too much different compared with a mid $500 range laptop. It even freezes sometimes. The funny thing is that the best cure i can find to prevent it from random freezing seem to be gaming at least once every two hours. I guess my g73 is to some extent addicted to gaming.
now i have an ssd, g73 becomes a real computer. It is simply super fast even when fully loaded. now i use it for everything. but the sad news is that the ssd didn't cure my g73's addiction for gaming.
well, just give you a reasonable expectation for the upgrade. actually there're not too many things you can upgrade for your g73. i guess the performance boost from upgrading an ssd is the most significant.
finally, yes, ssd will drop price in the future. perhaps, you are likely to pay $50 less a year from now for a 120gb ssd. But think in another way, just consider it a shipping charge, is $50 worth a year's waiting time? -
SSD prices are pretty low currently compared to the HDD prices, i doubt it will get much cheaper for now.
I paid for my first SSDs around 300€ each, now you get similar SSDs for 150€ and less. My favourite brand is "G.Skill", followed by "Kingston". I use since over 2 years that SSDs daily a lot and write tons of data on them, so far no issues at all.
A SSD is a huge performance boost for the G73 or G74, people who don't use a SSD these days are simply outdated and waste their lifetime with loading bars -
Still way too expensive for me. Plus, the capacity of a typical SSD is much too small for me to fit both the OS as well as all my other games and applications. I'm still using the stock 5400 RPM HDD that came with mine and honestly it doesn't feel that bad compared to my desktop 10,000 RPM. My only gripe is that loading into a game the first time is very slow.

i wouldn't say an ssd is what makes a machine stable or not, as my g73s used to have hard drives that ran just fine. but then i got a 128gb ssd awhile ago and can never go back due to the now-apparent noise and speed difference. my machine boots in 20 seconds or so and though opening programs isnt as instant as i thought, loading games is huge, especially the maps within in the games and that means a world to me
if you bought an spendy laptop like the g73, you gotta put an ssd in it. powerful processors and gpus are great, but an ssd is also just as indispensible for performance...its just not as cool to people who don't know better -
Get an SSD, you will never look back. I just went big time, a new Crucial CT512gb. While prices do go down over time, the prices on SSD's are not exactly dropping at a high rate and have kept a good part of their pricing. So waiting may not save alot of $$$.
Is now a good time to upgrade my G73Jh with an SSD drive? Also, any recommendations for an SSD drive to buy?
