I have a Dell right now and it's an utter POS, the CPU goes from 50C to 60C when I visit a new webpage causing the fan kick in every other minute. How's the cooling/fan system on this Asus? If I use high performance mode does the fan often come on during light work?

I have Starcraft 2 open, Pandora and 3 other tabs in Mozilla. Currently my fan is barely audible in a silent room. Now, once I install my 920xm cpu, things may be different :)

Edit: oops, I misread this as G73. However, I'd think the G53 should be about as quiet as the G73.

I can talk about how silent the g53sw even in full fan bore mode for all the day.
In general gaming sessions or browsing/movies it's almost not udible. Fans are gently spinning without causing huge noise which is a good thing.
Also my Zalman nc-2000 makes much more noise when turned on with full fan lol.
I'm also coming from a dell and the fans were unbearable. I did make an habit out of it with time but hell, it was a jumbo jet.
For sure it's one of the most silent, cool and quiet laptops ever made. I think only alienwares are second to it.
The hardware may not be that great, granted, but the heat system and build quality (not to mention the 15" form factor) really makes up for it.
And it's great to see a small machine like this perform wonderfully good when the gpu is overclocked. Definitely the best bang for the buck if you take in account that for the same price there are POS laptops with low end cards such gt525/6630m.

The fan on my G53SW is almost completely silent, even during heavy gaming sessions with CoD and the system never gets hot. I really like that the system stays cool and blows the air out of the back vents.

True. Even my G53JW is extremely quiet while playing GTA4, COD, Mafia 2 etc, all in the highest settings.

So the fan is always on right? My main problem with the XPS isn't so much the noise but the fact the fan stays off until I do something - ANYTHING - at which point it ramps up for a minute before turning off again. It's maddening, I'm willing to sell this thing half price as soon as I find a new laptop

I don't think the fan remains on all the time. But the cooling system works perfectly. Better than it's supposed to work. No wonder people say asus got their cooling right. :)

I don't know about always on, but it's on for me right now, and I'm just using Chrome to browse the web. It is very low, but audible, and if I put my hand back there I can feel the cool air blowing out.
