So I was thinking of swapping/selling my MacBook Pro 13 and came across this G73JH on my local ads site. The thing is, I'm not sure if this is a really old model or not. I'm looking to swap my Pro for a gaming laptop that can play the latest games ie The Witcher 2, Crysis 2 etc.
Here's a link to the spec of the G73JH:

Here's my MacBook Pro's specs:

Yes it would be a definate upgrade to your Macbook pro if you intend to game the JH is a great model. See my sig for benchmark results not to mention its ability to upgrade. Your old setup is similiar to what I had before and the increase in performance is mind blowing when you get an I series along with a high end GPU.
Not a bad price either and you could easily upgrade to the I7 XM model from the I5 you get with it if you need more power in the future.
You can increase the 4Gb ram to 8Gb and add an SSD. But as it is you will be able to play all games at the moment with ease. -
first:
You will indeed see an improvement from your macbook, I had macs and I can tell you they were terrible for games, but you know that already so...
If you can swap for it without using money, I guess it should be a good deal? Anyway the games that you mention, on the g73 runs at likely 30/40 FPS at best, with some tweak, (we can say nearly everything maxed out for Crysis I think, while the witcher 2 settings are reduced, since it makes choke even desktop system.)
Yet both games looks amazing, so, I suggest you to take a look over the threads in this forum and get an idea about how they are, I cannot say more, you need to get your own idea.
The G73 is a very solid machine, yet, it is now one year and half old... The current offert from asus aren't any better honestly, (the g74) because the GPU is on par with our, and it is what we really need to push those games futher.
EDIT:
Screw Dallers and his native english capability so it is always faster than me :X -
Yeah go the G73JH if you need gaming mate, its a awsome little beat and with a little bit of juggling you can get the witcher 2 looking good and running good at the same time...
Cheers -
It does seem cheap though. I've posted a message telling him I'm interested in swapping my Pro and I've also asked him to put up a real photo of the laptop too. I'll let you know what he says.
Are you sure one 5870 would handle games like TW2 and Crysis 2? -
It handles it very well and you have the majority of the settings maxed out at 1080P and achieve 30fps + which considering this is a notebook shows the 5870m is still a card to be reckoned with 18 months from release.

The only thing your MBP has more, is it's insanely, and stupidly high price. It's a horrible trade for the other person to take your notebook as he can easily buy a cheap 13" notebook from any Best Buy with some rebates today that is still better than your overpriced and overrated MBP. -
Yeah I know the G73JH is miles better than my MBP, that's why when I saw he was looking to swap for one I was a bit shocked. I'm from Ireland so we don't have best buy here. I'll definitely make the switch if he replies to my offer.

You know it's funny. The G73JH is the very definition of why Mac users go Mac so it amuses me when someone on the Apple camp wants to get one. Let's get the obvious out the way, the Macbook Pro and a G73 are not the same kind of laptop. Saying a G73 is 'better' is like saying my car is better than a motorcycle. Not really a super deep comparison, I'm just saying the machines are entirely different. The G73 is a portable desktop, the Macbook is a laptop. So if you're expecting portability like a Mac in a G73 then do not bother but you probably already knew that.
Secondly, the G73JH is all about "When you get me to work, I will be amazing". When you get one there will be a 2 maybe 3 hour period of pure troubleshooting right out the gate. You will most likely have to update the BIOS, the vBIOS (Possibly), possibly open the laptop to remove the tape off the trackpad because more than likely it will be utterly fudged up out the gate, even more possibly you might have to repaste. This guy has probably not touched his install or is really outdated so you will have to do a nice updated clean install. Know that going in that there will be a large window of pure troubleshooting the moment you get one, it's a standard Mac users nightmare.
That said, once everything is ready to go it's an amazing little machine. If you're willing to jump over that initial hurdle then you'll get a great machine out of it. -

Yeh, I don't mind any necessary work that will need to be done with it. You're absolutely right, you can't compare a MacBook to a G73. I'm an avid gamer. I've had the MacBook for about 2 years now and have been using my PS3 and 360 for gaming up until now but the thought of playing games like The Witcher 2 and such on high settings tickles my fancy.

Is this G73JH a worthy swap for my MacBook Pro?
