I think my GPU fan is going. It's starting to sound just like the fan on my dads old laptop before it went, except the G73 isn't as loud.
I plan on taking it to Best Buy today. This should be covered under warranty, right?

It ought to be! That's hardware, after all. Though, best buy being what it is, may decline your repair based on a) It's only failing, not FAILED and b) Well, that could be user-error. We'll have to run 3 weeks of diagnostics, and the problem doesn't show up regularly enough for everyone to see/hear it.

Oh god I wish you luck. Have fun dealing with Geek Squad, I'd rather hunt for a fan myself than take it to those crooks. <_<

Best Buy has to send it out..
Asus stopped letting most Best Buy work on them localy.

Well thats what my Best Buy told me. They ship all Asus to be worked on.
These better guys suck at putting screws back in, so CHeck for Hard drives after you get it back...

Best buy never works on notebooks. They always ship it to the repair center. OP if you didn't purchase any warranty from best buy you might have to pay for parts/labor.

Actually, Best Buy does do in-store repairs or component upgrades. Maybe not for Asus notebooks, but certainly for other manufacture brands. If parts are not available at the local store or they lack qualified technicians, they are then shipped to Geek Squad City for repair.

I have had many notebooks from best buy and not once have they serviced them at the store. I have seen them work on desktops at best buy but not notebooks. They have a repair center in Ontario California just for notebooks and one in northern California for cameras and other electronics.

Dont wait is the only advice I can give you, you only have to block the vent at the back for a few seconds to see the temps shoot up and within seconds you could have some serious damage caused to the GPU if it conked out although it should shut down before that but its risky.

The fan is not that expensive mind and although it requires a total dissassembly is changeable quite easily. Its your call though if its within warranty its risky. Hope it doesn't die on you.

I don't have accidental, unfortunately. Best Buy wouldn't offer a loaner and I need my laptop until school is over, so I guess if it gets bad I'll just have to do the work myself or something.

At full load the GPU fan can blow quite hard even if the noise is quite low. Are you sure its not just come loose inside have you banged it or anything or could it be clogged with dust? Im splitting hairs here of course just those fans are suppose to handle 50000 hours before starting to cough and I know how mind blowingly annoying it is to not have your system by your side especially when its floating around a repair centre :(

the only time bestbuy will service your notebook is when you purchase their geek squad warranty which is not only a rip off but i would rather have a trained monkey work on my notebook then a trained bb rep (no offence to the handful of decent techs they have). As far as your issue with the fan being loud. It is somewhat known that the tape around the speaker wire on the top cover can come off right into the blades of the fan. I have seen this a few times. these fans are least likely to break in such a short time.

I'll have a look at that when I get the time.
Anyone here seen the speaker bar on the SW? Sweetness. I kinda wanna replace the speakerbar on mine with it. So much dust and crap stuck in there. =/

It doesn't sound like that sadly.
I actually don't notice the sound that much right now, so we'll see.
