    Dear all,

This morning after a short gaming session in SWTOR I tried to turn the laptop (Asus G73sw) off the usual way via the windows menu (Windows 7) to prepare for work but after the Windows screen dissapeared it didn't shut down properly. The screen stayed gray(ish) (illuminated) and the fan(s) were working full speed. After a few minutes I decided to use the power button to shut it down (by holding it in for several seconds).

When I tried to turn it on again (to reassure for myself that everything is/was ok before I went to work) everything starts up (all lights are on) and the screen goes from black to gray(is) (or illuminated black :)) as it usually does just before the Asus logo appeares. However, the logo never appeared at it seems the laptop is stuck at this point in the start up. I only needed to press the power button briefly to turn it off and try again with the same thing happening. Hence, I went to work hoping that things will be ok when I come back home this afternoon.

I've only recently got the laptop back from a warranty repair where they replaced the VGA card (start-up problems but with totally black screen). The laptop was bought in July 2011 so I was hoping it would be working for a longer time before new problems started.

Anyone have any idea what has happened ? What should I do if the PC will not start ? Since the screen lights up (although no Asus logo) I'm hoping that the VGA card is still ok?

Sorry for the long post but I hope someone out there have some tips for a newbie in the laptop/PC department :)

    Greetings from Norway :)

Hey, sad though but try removing both the hdd and power on, and enter bios reset to defaults. if that doesnt work remove battery + ac power and hold power button for 45 seconds and reinstall everything and try. if that doesnt works you have to remove cmos battery. but is this laptop covered with warrenty still?

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Luckily my Asus is still under warranty. I bought it with 24 months warranty 7 months ago so still 17 months left :)

Hence, I dont think I will try anything that requires me opening up the laptop. I'll try the remove battery + ac + 45 seconds holding in the power button when I come home from work.

Is it possible to enter the bios screen when I can't get the Asus logo to show on the screen ? How do I reset the bios if that is necessary (without opening up the laptop) ?

there is a small pin hole you should send something small in it and press then bios gets reset.

I thought they removed this option from the SW's. I though it was only on the JH.

You are correct JayBGamer, there is no pin hole on the G73sw.

I've now tried several times with taking the battery out, taking ac power out, holding in the power button but nothing works. When I turn it on the screen lights up as it normally does just before the Asus logo appears but the logo never appears (I let it stay on like this for almost 1 hour....) and the machine is unresponsive to any button commands (except for turning the screen light on and off which works).

This is so frustrating considering that a) the laptop was bought 7 months ago and b) I've just got it back (14 days ago) from repair due to a faulty VGA. I thought these Asus machines were solid choices ? They are expensive enough for me thinking that.....

I guess I have no other choice then to return the laptop in for another repair (hopefully it will be covered by my still existing 17 months of warranty).

    Regards,

    A frustrated gamer

sorry about that , my asus g73jh bst7 also dont have that hole.
does the keyboard light up and can you manual restart with ctrl+alt+del?
if you could do that then you are safe I have the solution.

Hmmm.....did another try on hitting the power button (now with only the battery on) and it started up with the Asus logo (hurray!). Now it wants me to do a system recovery and I am now staring at the system recovery options. What to do now? Should I continue or cancel the recovery option?

cancel it and boot to windows as normal, do you have recovery dics?? if you have then do a recovery. but boot to windows and restore. then you will have 0 problems.

your ac adapter mite be the culprit, try powering on without battery ,but with ac adapter. and tell me the results.

Ok, the laptop is up and running now. System repairs were performed and the laptop restarted without issues. But now I am afraid to turn it off...hehe. Anywhere I can see what was wrong and what types of repairs that were perfomed ?

Shut down the laptop, took out battery, pressed power button with only AC adapter ---> laptop starts up as normal

    Now I'm confused :)

If i were you, i would run a full diagnostic on my HDD as well just to be safe, the issue you described in your first post could have been a driver locking up, although i'm not certain why the laptop wouldn't post afterwards.

So.....I'm back to the original problem.....screen lights up when power is on but no Asus logo :(

However, I think I have some clues on what the problem is. I was in the process of reinstalling Norton Internet Security due to an error (8504, 104) preventing Norton to launch. When I am visiting the Norton page on internet I get a warning about a bad video card driver (Nvidia Verde driver 290 something beta version) and that the system has restored it and a few seconds later the screen flickers and the laptop powers down. Now I am unable to get the laptop started again (screen lights up but no logo).

I am guessing a bad video card driver is not a warranty issue ? Anything I can do ? For some reason I thought that I had the system recovery DVD but I just found out that it was not included with the Asus G73sw and I have not made recovery DVDs :(

I guess I am back to try and get the laptop started and then try to reinstall the video card driver.

Yesterday I went to the service shop with my laptop (luckily the Asus partner has a service shop in the town I live :)). Today I see on the service case online that they have ordered a new VGA board and lcd screen. Lets hope they are able to fix it this time :)

That was definitely a hardware issue, not driver.
