I just brought a used G73JH bestbuy model from craigslist for 900 dollars. Was that a good purchase? He brought it new in May of 2010. He said his wife doesn't like him playing video games so he need to sell it. Everything seems to work. I just updated the bios to 211. I am planing to do a clean install of windows 7 once my SSD hard comes in from Amazon. I also order a 2gb stick of ram.

I am just worry since i read alot of problems with the G73 here. What should I look out for?

Oh and thank you for reading my post.

That's an excellent deal. Make sure the warranty was transferred to your name in case something happens.

PS: I've seen my fair share of angry wives screaming at their husbands when I used to play WoW. I wouldn't 'give in' and sell my laptop ever ...that's why I'm not married ;)

I believe the warranties for bestbuy are tied to the receipt actually... So you may want to see if you can get that from him...

Yes, great deal and setting gaming expectations b4 getting married helps make sure that never happens. I too would never sell a laptop based on external influences. Only reason to sell is to buy an even better system :).

Quick social lesson, boys and girls.

The art of marriage is compromise, accomodation of our partner's opinions and feelings, and priorities. Those of us who understand that she matters too, and apply it, well ..... she'll love you more for it :)

    1) Make sure the warranty gets transferred to your name.

    2) Install the vBIOS from this thread.

I have no problem with "compromise and accommodation of our partner's opinions, feelings, and priorities" as long as the aforementioned does not infringe upon my opinions, feelings, and priorities... especially as it pertains to games, movies and the acquisition of new electronic gizmos. :) Everything else is fair game.

    Cheers,

Thanks you guys for your input I am going to update the vbios this weekend... As for the laptop my wife doesn't know about it yet... I'm about to sell my old ASUS laptop for 400 soon that would off set the price for the G73 a little...

Oh yes should I upgrade the LCD? I was reading about that in the forum.

Only if you feel that it's necessary. I find the LG 1600 x 900 screen on my model fine. Also has better performance at native resolution.

Great deal, I bought mine used also. The seller wanted $900, but when Furmark overheated the comptuer and crashed it, he reduced the price to $750. I got the receipt from the seller. Also I am in the middle of the RMA processes, so far no issues not being the original owner. I think they care more about the manufacture date than anything, once you get a year past that, they'll want the receipt for sure.

So I'm looking at one on craigslist right now, what should I do when I meet up with the seller in order to make sure it passes the "tests"? I read something about a Furby overheating a gremlin? ;)

I think 1600x900 is better suited for the G73. 1080p is awesome but the jump from 1600x900 to 1920x1080 isn't huge enough for me to really care and to want the performance loss. Plus if I ever want, I can always connect mine to my 1080p HDTV. It's better to upgrade the existing LCD with one of the same resolution but better picture quality, especially if you have the AUO screen.

The latest BB model, the one with the i7-640qm, is sort of a close call for me.

For my eyes, the 1600 x 900 is probably best, but what bums me is the slower HDD they are using now. I can pop in a faster one as the primary, but then, I usually put my virtual memory on the second HDD, meaning that will be running at 5400 rpm rather than 7200.

I figure it this way: The BB is $1.2k. The new jw online is $1.745k. To the BB I have to add tax and the price of a backpack, which for me would be about $140, a new HDD, 2GB more memory, and now I'm close to within $200 to the fully loaded jw.

BTW, the one I looked at over there at BB does have the Intel Advanced-N card, which is nice, but also the 1.3 MP webcam.

While I agree with you that the jump from 1600x900 to 1920x1080 isn't huge, when it comes to the laptops themselves there is quite a difference - primarily because the 1920x1080 laptops do have a higher quality display panel. I owned the BB model for a week then purchased the G73JW (returned the BB model). The difference in picture quality was quite noticeable and it wasn't simply because of the difference in resolution.

Now this is the kind of thing I'm hoping to learn here. Thank you, Phatal, for mentioning it!

The BB models have the worst screens of all the G73 models, amazing looking 1600x900 screens do exist, but you will not find them on the G73. The LG screen is good but the AUO screen is pretty meh. So saying the JW or any of the non-BB G73 variants have a better screen isn't saying much except that Asus should have just used similar screens in every model.
