Just repasted. watched the video one time and said meh whatever...
never done any computer work on a laptop but i figured this thing is broken anyway
have a few screws left over....
i repasted the GPU with a pea on the heatsink of IC diamond 7
cleaned the fan filters
I was idling at 78-81
Right now an hour after paste i am stable at 54 !!!!!!!!!! clocks at 700/1000
81 - 54 = 27 degree change
now my GSODing on all drivers even stock...
-
What do you mean by "few screws left over" ???
And you mean now you GSOD on all drivers or you don't have anymore GSOD? -
always had gsod on all drivers... thats just me though
finished the job and still had a few screws ahaha,,, i dunno whatever its going smooth at 54 right now -
It's probably just some random screws the Asus design engineers decided to throw in as extras. Nothing to worry about I'm sure.......................
Sorry I can't stop the sarcasm. Good job on the repaste, missing screws aside. As soon as my warranty is up I'll be doing the same. -
My congrats!!!
Hope fix for GSODs will come out very soon.
-
forgot to unhook that little thin under the keyboard they said would break if not undone carefully... but somehow it survived...
now idling at 52... stuff seems to be getting better
--> is my warranty voided now???? -
-
What about your ambient temperaute?
-
ambient = australia = hot.... probably 25/26 in day... 11-15 at night.
idled at 51 in day, 49 now at night
anyway after i let it et for 3 hours now i am idling at 49 -
update ran 3dmark06 used to hit 105 easy now max was 69
3D MARK SCORE stock clocks 13168 3DMarks thats a 2000 increase over my overheating version on 10.7a , 705/1100, when i actually finished it one time -
-
i edited it -
hmm... hot? here i'm is 40C max in the day
-
congratulations

If you have screws left over you did not reassemble it fully, which means items may not be secured and you can and probably will get problems because of it.
Laptops have always been constructed with a "tie everything down" mentality due to the abuse they see. thus everything is bolted to where it will provide rigidity and support.
You not putting everything back together the way it was taken apart means that the notebook is now compromised. Any way you look at it, if you do not reassemble it properly and you have a problem in the future, YOU are at fault, since the manufacturer cannot tell if your faulty reassembly caused the problem or if one existed prior.
In other words, reassemble it properly with all the right screws where they need to be, otherwise if you need warranty service you can consider your warranty null and void.
As a tech there would have been a snowballs chance in hell of me granting warranty coverage if I received a laptop from an end-user that had screws missing. On a laptop screws are considered critical components and I have never seen one with screws missing from the factory.
It is posts like that that make a company like Asus institute a policy of "open it up and we void your warranty", primarily because of certain end-users having no clue on what they are doing (such as having extra screws) and then thinking they have some sort of warranty rights when things go wrong.
Go back and watch the disassembly video, he describes every single screw in detail so you should be able to figure out where they need to go.
Also, if you got GSOD while running 9.12 or 10.1 Asus drivers you should have RMA'd the laptop before even attempting to replace the TIM on the GPU. If you have GSOD while running 9.12 or 10.1 Asus drivers, then there is a physical problem with your machine.
Based on your posts here I highly doubt anyone here has confidence you can even uninstall and reinstall the proper drivers so unless you go back to a factory image, you are probably fubar'd. You can give it a shot, use the the ATI uninstall, then driversweeper in safe mode and then reinstall 10.1 and see if you have any GSOD. If so you are screwed because your warranty is void without the proper screws back in the laptop where they orignally needed to go. -
Agree with Beast here, go back and find your missing holes and put the screws in them.
-
1) i know how to use driversweeper, but thanks so much for the thoughtful and kind suggestion on how to properly remove drivers
2) screws were 2 on the outside panel and a hard drive one that i missed in my excitement to get it back together for my first paste job to see if it works. So i doubt any techs like you will be voiding warranties over guys like me anytime soon... but again i appreciate your 'tough love' attitude in making me see the wrongs of my ways
3) i am running the VGA drivers off of the ASUS website, 9.12 and my machine still GSODs with a factory image and fresh-ish (now) win7 install.
4) Yes my machine is a brick but i cannot wait 4 weeks for a RMA due to the nature of my work. Also, have lost trust in ASUS RMA from stories on this thread and experience of a couple of friends of mine. and no i cant carry 2 computers around for a spare, or just buy a new one, its not that simple with what i do. i have to keep this one now until i have time off and hope asus fixes gsod that helps mine somewhat.
edit:: i should add that since my repaste i made it through 3dmark06 and havnt gsoded again all night on stock, which for me is a huge first. it might be my computer was having some sort of weird heat difficulty unique to mine when i was idling at 81. but i dont want to jinx it... been on cs5 for 3 hours, left it on watching exendables, talked on skype, went out, came home and still no gsod! hope it lasts
--> and just so you know, i still have one screw. i took it out on purpose, just to let you know its out of its socket. sitting there on my desk, voiding warranties, alone... scared. which hole was it from? which parts are coming loose... -
Congratulations on the great temps, fritzer.
I was pretty excited/anxious about booting mine up after I put it back together. It's pretty nerve wracking after you push the power button waiting for the logo to appear on the screen and then holding your breath to see if it posts and starts booting windows.
I haven't purchased a desktop in 15 years or more... I always build them, but I hate taking a laptop apart. They are just so delicate on the inside.
Oh and put all the screws in, dude! -
i made little cubby holes for the ones inside... but in the excitement of finishing was like 3screws?! aahh what the hell im done now
but they were all on the outsise and one hdd drive one
i think its worth cleaning the fan filter when your in there -
-
Yeah, that video on Youtube is awesome for this... tells you every single step, was very impressed. Went totally painless with that loaded up to watch on a second laptop while doing the job.
And it does help temps! -
-
just ran 3dmark06 -> for me the best test how games actually run on this computer... starcraft2 etc hit 105 plus then shut off same as 3dmark did in same time
after repaste just ran 3dmark06 770/1100 and got 13803 so still no gsod on stock after i repasted... temps hit 76
my other 3dmark06 not overclocked temps hit 69
idling at 54 in mid day 23 degrees celcius
(will add that their paste job was insanely bad, there was paste leaked all over the chip... sigh ASUS) -
my cpu is running 57-60 is this normal in windows, lets say skype and broswer open??
-
-
haha always
Just Repasted--- !!!
