    Hey Guys,
I just bought a used ASUS G73JH and I got a great deal. It's going strong so far! I checked the Bios version and it turns out it's on 213. I just updated the Catalyst to 11.7.

That's about all I've done so far with it. Is it okay for me to have updated the catalyst to 11.7? Will it be more stable than before? and what are the optimum settings you guys recommend (drivers, catalyst version etc)

While I was using the laptop earlier, I never saw the Intel Turbo Boost bar go up but now I see it going upto 2 Ghz every now and then. I don't know what that means, but just putting it out there.

Also, the temperature earlier on GPU-Z was 58*c idle however now its about 62*C

    Thanks!

P.S How do I check if this laptop has not been messed around with? The guy seemed pretty honest and said that nothing had been tempered with but I still got a 3-day checking warranty from him. What signs do you all think I should be looking for which could potentially be dangerous?

Video BIOS Version: 012.020.000.032.038352 has become the standard VBIOS for many users here, If you run into any GSOD I would recommend updating. It can be found G73/74/53 Series Driver and Application Reference

Your idle temps are fine have your done any stress testing (Furmark) ?

Yep, just update that vBIOS and you'd be set. Pop open your underside panel, and you can see half of your GPU on top. On it is a part number. If it ends with -C0x, where x = some number, like C06, then you don't need to do the vBIOS update.

If it ends with -C1x, then you need to update it to avoid GSOD issues. You can read up on this in the "How to Fix Your GSOD Blues" in the main sticky.

Thanks guys! I'll open it up and confirm the number on the GPU. Or might as well just upgrade, does it matter if it does end with a 0 like C06 and I still upgrade the vBios?

    Appreciate the help! Thanks!

Oh and I have been gaming on it since two days (as it was a weekend) and it's running perfectly. No overheating and thankfully no GSOD!

You can still upgrade it on C0x cards.

What's the problem with that? Its actually better then G74.... Its such a shame that they used NVIDIA card with it.. an ATI one would have made G74 an attractive option.... I still would buy the G73 although its 2 year old tech.

With refurbished models and used models floating around in the 600-900$ price range, they are great deals for the price still.

For your idle temps, they are fine for the stock clock settings, but I would recommend chastitys vbios that downclock the card or I use Amd gpu clock utility to downclock my card while not gaming and my temps stay in the 49c range.

Gratz on your JH and welcome to the forum :)

The 5870M has been known to run hot but as many will tell you as long as you are running below 100oC at full pelt that is pretty normal pre-TIM-repaste.

Great price and lots of upgradability I wish others were not so scared of the JH because the fixable niggles and its performance vs price make it a great buy.

Well sometimes I wish I had a NVIDIA GPU instead because there are a few games with better support for NV, unfortunately. Lazy (or overworked) developers and developers who were bought off by NV to add special features.

Although during the almost year long GSOD debacle I bet a lot of people were wishing for a NV chip. I just RMAed until I got a notebook that worked correctly because the BIOS update didn't exist yet.
