No you guys werent kidding, my temps went from 100c to 71c max on unigine heaven dx11. Idle sits around 58c-ish. My testicle aren't burning any more when I have it on my lap lol YAY. Keyboard feel a little... loose but overall its running awesome. I'm wondering if I can go over 740mhz overclock now that its running cooler.
I wanted to add IC7 to the CPU but I saw the warranty void is removed so I left it alone. I have about 1 month of warranty (July) left and was thinking of going to Best Buy (its where I bought it from) and buy the extended warranty on it. It will cost an additional 350 bucks and was wondering if its worth it? If it breaks a certain way, I can have it repair or even get it replaced with a similar product. I am asking because I like to improve the laptop by adding a 1920x1080 LCD, found one on ebay for about 160 bucks but not sure if I should invest in it since the G74 is coming out. I know the 560m sucks but I hear the final product MAY be an overall improvement.
Sorry for the double post I hit back by accident ;/ I tried to delete one but I can't find the option. Sorry admins ;(

overclock is not temperature dependent
-
What do you mean?
The cooler the video card, the better chances of overclocking it. I ran 800mhz (from 700mhz) and it did not crash. Before, it would crash, granted I still need to test it some more, but before the cool temps it would crash anything beyond 740mhz almost instantaneously.
I wanted to ask, can I replace the memory thermal pads with IC7 on or is there a GAP between the memory and heatsink that needs to be filled with the thermalpads? I feel I could get better temps i I could cool down the memory. -
If you are referring to the max overclock you can achieve then temperature makes no difference as its dependent on the voltage supply reaching the GPU.
There should not be a gap between the VRAM pads and the heatsink. Its sounds as if you have not reseated it properly or you have dislodged one of the VRAM strips there should be two and if you have left it like that expect a white screen under load if your memory burns out then its game over.
Do not use thermal compound on the thermal pad.
Go back and fix it with new pads if needby but most people just reuse the old ones unless they have been soiled. In my sig are my results from IC7 and I use 0.5mm thermal pads and my temps are practically the same overall now Mem(io), Disp, Core are all are within 1oC of the diode.

^What Dallers said, i can vouch for the new thermal pads making little to no difference. You definitely need pads on the vRAM chips to prevent them from burning though.

Thanks for the advice but I was careful to put the thermal in place. They fell off but I was able to easily put them back on. To my understanding, thermal pads are normally used when there is a gap between the a chip and the heatsink. Take the dv6000, dv9000, dv2000, its northbirdgige/vga gas a gap that is fill in using a thick thermalpad to transmit hear to the heatsink. Was hoping to replaced the pad with ic7 if there were no gap but your advices suggest I should NOT TO DO THAT, so I won't.
Any major benefit if IC7 was applied to cpu?
Would you cough up an extra 350$ for an extended warranty?
Spend an additional 170 for a LCD that's 1920x1080
or simply wait for the g74? -
If you're using a stock paste that the mfg put on, applying your own thermal paste will definitely see you a drop in temperature. How much depends on too many factors that makes it difficult to approximate though. How long is your warranty currently? Did you pay with a credit card that has electronics warranty? Are you rough with your electronics or will you travel a lot? Personally, I wouldn't get any warranty from BB and just upgrade everything myself instead of purchasing a new laptop.

To answer the OP about the upgrades, it really doesn't seem like the G74's going to be much of an upgrade over the G73, at least in the GPU department. That may change once the G74 matures and more potent GPU choices come out, but IMHO the 560GTX isn't much of an upgrade over the JH's HD5870. I recently ditched the glossy 1600x900 display for a matte 1920x1080; while some might not like the matte finish I think it's awesome and I really like the increased resolution. I don't get near as much glare from light sources and have been able to use my G73 outside for short stretches. I'm very happy with it and don't really see the need to upgrade anytime soon. -
Looks like the ac jack is damaged. Not sure if I caused it, but when I move it up or down, the ac shows as disconnected. It can only be a broken port, maybe one of the solder points came loose. I doubt it happen when I opened it up as no force was put on it. I steped on the cable a few days ago togging the cable from the ac port. That might have done it. You guys know if the regular warranty covers this? Damm this sucks!
if its not covered I may HAVE to get the extended warranty ;/
Just finished applying IC7 on G73JH xD WOW! Room for improvment?
