The lights on the back of the screen work, but only the right side light works on the sides of the screen.. nothing at all out of the left. I just noticed it and i've already put a couple of hours in putting software on and removing garbage so I really dont' want to send it back, any ideas on how to get the other working?

    Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a hardware not a software problem are you using Direct Console? what operating system are you running?

Well I had problems with Direct console in Windows 7 you are running the drivers under Compatability Vista SP2 mode right? That was my problem but Asus may have released Windows 7 certified drivers for your 71 I dont know. Surprising that a refurbed laptop shows up broken I would be demanding a refund as its clearly not refurbed.

Edit: The Leds are soldered in you would need to remove the plastic with a THIN flat head screwdriver and then resolder them in. Not worth the risk to be honest.

Asus has win 7 drivers on their website so i downloaded them all. But if I can just pop off some plastic to check the led's i will, they're not that important to me, just wanted everything to work correctly, i've spent alot of time setting it up already

Important or not having one working and the other not is just annoying. You can have a go it may be a simple resolder jobby. Good luck!

I can't get the screen casing separated to get access to the lights. I removed the complete screen assembly from the bottom section, removed all screws but it won't separate. Any ideas?

Which lights are we talking about? Mine are on the side of the screen and im able to just pop off the plastic with a really thin screwdriver (flat head)

As I said I did but not anymore. When i did it just popped out but I was using my G70S not 71 I dont know if they are the same.

I cannot advise you on dismantleing the screen due to the possible bad outcomes from it but if you are looking to resolder it you would need to take the screen apart anyway to get to the chipboard that it is soldered onto.

Hate to say it but if you want it to be perfect the only thing you can do is send it back and get a replacement. : (

Check under any rubber feet for screws. I almost snapped the plastic discovering them when I first took my screen apart.

Underneath there is a logic board for the lights with a few ZIF connectors. Make sure they're all in place and secure and if everything is in order and your lights are still not functioning, RMA/return it. Or do what I did and unplug them altogether.

i took those 4 screws out but everything still seems really "stuck" together, like there's some sort of 3m tape or something, are there some snaps or clips or something holding it together? I dont' want to break the screen. I'm not worried about soldering, and if its just connectors, I can swing that too, I just don't want to break it.

For me there were snaps, I just pried it apart carefully and it went fine. There are 6 screws for me, 4 under circular pads and two under long strip pads by the camera.

so basically same computer, how do you remove the camera to remove those screws? do u think you could take a couple of pictures of how you've separated the screen? or even post or email me a video of how you've done it?

    Thanks in advance!

Nonono, I didn't remove the camera. I'm not explaining it properly:

On my computer's screen bezel, under every rubber pad there is a screw. There are four screws, one in each corner under each circular rubber pad, and then two more at the top underneath a longer rubber pad there. Maybe the G71 is different but really, just look for places where there might be screws and you can't go wrong.
