So I just got my ASUS G73JH today. I read many post about updating bios and other stuff can cause lots of problems. I'm just wondering if I will I be fine without updating anything. Or is the update for bios safe now? I'm new to updating bios too.

Never update the Bios unless you're experiencing some problems yourself. Use the G73 for a week at least and do some gaming before worrying about that stuff. I would suggest a clean W7 install though

What do people mean when they say DO NOT UPDATE ON BATTERY? I use the charger when updating the BIOS instead?

If anything interrupts your power during a BIOS flash your machine will turn into a brick. Batteries cannot be trusted, plugging in the system and having a fully charged battery is what people consider "safe".

Don't update your system yet, just test it out for a week or 2 and see if things are going ok.

If you do come into issues, keyboard lag, cpu throttling all that was fixed in bios 209. The current bios is 211. There is a debate that some believe 209 is better. I personally am using 211. To update your bios, use ezflash which is built into your bios. Never never use winflash. Check your temperature to see if your within ok range. I use HWmonitor most of the time. And i idle around 62c. Next thing you will want to get is "amdgpuclocktool" get the one stated for 5870. Most of us have trouble playing with updated drivers. If your using the stock ones or the one from asus website then your fine. But if you were to download newer ati drivers, chances are you will have gsod. If you don't then your one lucky feller. If you do then try clocking up to something around 705/1100. Stick around the forums and u'll be able to find all the solutions you need to have this working fine.

put it into a fat32 formated thumbdrive.
restart your com and press f2
you will then boot into the bios
i'm not sure which tab but you'll be able to find ezflash in it.
once you've found it just have to select the bios from the thumbdrive.
make sure you have your power connected.

Plug your thumbdrive in, open my computer
select the drive and look at the bottom bar.
    It should say Fileformat: Fat32
    Most thumbdrives are fat32.

As they said, do not update if you do not have any problems

K, I successfully updated it to 211. Anything else I need to configure or update to get my new labtop into good shape?

Probably get the 10.1 vga drivers from asus if you don't plan on clocking up your gpu. Its very old but thats the stable driver for the time being. Anything newer and your bound to face gsod's and stuff.

K, there's settings for the computer mode I need help on. Should I enable fastboost?

There's aslo setting to change to high performance, entertainment, battery saving, office mode, what should the default one be?

And about the subwoofer, how do I adjust it, or turn it on and off?

THe performance all that are just profiles. Adjust them to your liking. I use entertainment for normal use and high profile for games. Basically my high performance i set things in high where else entertainment i set it more for battery saving. As for the subwoofer its in the creative control panel. But enable cmss to avoid future conflicts.

Hibernate - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Forums

    buttons:
left - lights (keyboard, below monitor and the 3 button lights)
middle - twin turbo (clocks up your cpu, not much use for games but helps a bit in multi threaded application.)
right - splendid (changes display colour tone)

i don't mean to be rude, but you should try doing some searching as well. All i did was type "disable hibernate windows 7" in google and the link was there. The forums is very helpful but at the same time you have to help yourself.
