Hi guys just wanted to tell you something that is so IMPORTANT...

I don't know how to tell you but,I don't know how my KB light came UP!?
I have updated bios from 209 to 211,and my KB light was gone(previously I have updated from 206 factory to 209,and everything whent OK,also through Winflash)! I did it through Winflash latest...And when computer shuts down I have waited 10sec to HDD's to stop spinning. Then, when I turned it back on >NO< KB light... I was really mad... Tried downgrading to 205,nothing. Tried reverting all to normal 211 BIOS,reinstalled ATK drivers...NOTHING...But 5min's ago I turned my G73 on and suddenly (really don't know how) lights were ON from BOOT to when I entered WIN 7... Can someone tell me how is this possible!? Or what the hell happened!? IF someone can?

You probably just had to press Fn+F4 to turn the lights back on.

If you did a little searching in these forums, you would have found a wealth of posts about keyboard lights and how to fix them. But no, you needed to start your own thread. So, just for you, here's the Keyboard Lights Mantra:

Everybody please repeat the Keyboard Lights Not Working Mantra:

The keyboard lights cannot be fixed with a BIOS update.

The keyboard lights cannot be fixed with buying a new keyboard.

The keyboard lights CAN be fixed by updating the firmware for the KEYBOARD LIGHT CONTROLLER on the motherboard using a proprietary application that ONLY THE ASUS TECHS HAVE ACCESS TO. You need to RMA.

    End of Mantra.

    Err Chastity...

He's saying that after losing his keyboard lights and trying everything...

For some reason they came back and he's asking if anyone has any idea why that happened.

I have no idea. But I do remember another user saying for some reason his keyboard lights returned, and he had no clue why either.

I saw that my ATK driver size is not 9MB it is 6MB...And while I was searching something about my G73,trying to figure it how it is possible for lights to come back by them self I saw that drivers I installed are 6MB...Researching and will let you know...Wish me luck :)

    Have you tried this:

Here's a reply from Gary regarding BIOS flashing and Keyboard Lights:

    Quote:
Sorry about the late reply as I am at QuakeCon this week and internet access has not been good. Yes, this is a test I ran last week in which I would brick the lights (did not always work but most of the time) and then reflash with the updated WinFlash tool and it worked 100% of the time. We asked the tech group to start trying it on returns for further testing and it appears it has been successful also. I wanted to make sure R&D blessed it but I think it would be safe for users to try at this point with the understanding that flashing the BIOS is always a risk.

    Sincerely,
    Gary
So, apparently, using the latest Winflash will restore the lights! And having to be at QuakeCon for the week is a terrible sacrifice he needs to do. What a terrible job he has! [/sarcasm]

I can't figure it out yet, what seems to be the trick. I tried to brick lights my self 2 times by downgrading to 206 and then going to 209,lights worked, then from 209 to 211,and lights still working... But when I upgraded to 211 from 209 first time lights were OUT,not working. I can't see if this trick above works but till I find out where seems to be the problem I can't tell you. I will not try to brick them any more because I tried 2x and saw that the system is very stable now...although I flashed and re-flashed in BIOS. Getting with news, when I have them...And if someone of you tries this tell others...And we will see who is faster...you or ME with fresh RESULTS of the test... :)

Well, I just tried this with no luck... Got the latest winflash, and bios 211 but no difference when it restarted =[. Maybe someone else can try this and see if it works for them.

    My version is 2.30.1

But checking the download from Asus under "Apps" they have 2.30.2 and .3

Weird thing is .2 version is dated as the latest. I guess the number system works differently for Asus

Guess I'll give it another shot but with which version I'm not sure yet.

If they said the latest, then why don't you use the latest?

Well because 2.30.3 would be considered the latest version for other programs but the time stamp for 2.30.2 is later than .3 making .2 the latest date wise.

So it throws me off as to while they did that but I went with .3 anyways.

Though I do have a newb question maybe. How do I reflash or downgrade? Winflash won't let me if the bios is older than the one currently being used.

Time stamp on Asus update site means nothing... That's like saying Asus ATi 10.1 drivers time stamp says it's newer than ATi's official 10.5 doesn't mean it is. Anyways...

Go into your Bios, Pres F2. Use EazyFlash and there you can downgrade. Then go into Windows and try your re-flash. Of course all of this at your risk.

Some believe placing the Bios on an external USB drive helps nothing goes wrong.

    Good luck and hopefully success.

    Thanks for the info.

I'm not comparing asus' winflash to another. Just on asus' update site they list three different versions of their winflash and their upload dates didn't make sense. One would think the latest version was .3 but date uploaded makes you think otherwise. Was just a bit confused at first.

Well, I just used the .3 version of winflash, but still no luck... I'm going to try the .2 version with the later date to see if that works. By the way using bios 211. Be back soon, wish me luck!

Ok just downgraded and reflashed and still no go for me. I'm really convinced though that they just probably connected it wrong or broke something or even put in a non-backlight working kb in by mistake from the RMA.

Who knows, next I'll just take out the keyboard and see for myself.

Don't expect too much. I just gave it a shot with my fingers crossed and no luck. Winflash version .1, .2, and .3 does not fix the keyboard lights unfortunately, unless they have another version of winflash thats not out to the public yet. Someone else wants to confirm this? Still looking for a fix... extremely frustrating as this was working before from 205 to 206, but not to 209...

If you read through the offical page of the keyboard light problem issue after flashing the Bios, we have unoffically determined that the keyboard has a firmware of its own and needs to be flashed with a specific program that only the Asus techs have. It seems like they don't want to release this program out to the public though, requiring us to RMA our notebooks at the time. Check out the thread for more info :)

YES! Same here! I have been waiting for this fix for a while now and hope that it will be fixed soon without having to RMA it.

So turns out the technician who fixed my notebook did not plug in the keyboard backlight ribbon in correctly. In fact it was done so horribly that the ribbon end itself is bent and scratched.

Prior to finding this out though I called and complained about getting my notebook back from RMA with backlighting not working on the KB (it was also black instead of grey like the original). I requested a replacement as I figured I would just replace it myself.

Now I got backlight working again as I inserted the ribbon in correctly. So for anyone who got their notebook back from RMA with no backlights or bought it without working backlights it might be a messed up ribbon connection. If it was working before a bios update I'm afraid you're out of luck :(
