This solution did not work for me. I have now tried upgraded to BIOS 213, doing this fix, re-installing ATK, and re-installing Power4Gear. My ribbon cable is facing the correct way. When I push Fn+F4 there is no indication by the computer that I have done anything (not sure if there is supposed to be).

For the heck of trying I removed my keyboard and carefully made sure the cable was straight and plugged in well and rebooted, I now see pop-ups when I push the keyboard lighting buttons for brighter or dimmer, though I still don't have lighting.

Unfortunetely the pop-ups you mention are only showing that ATK package is working with the keyboard and the system is recognising the request it does not confirm why your keyboard is not lighting up.

Try this it has worked for several people including myself a while back when I was having BIOS issues.

Have you made your flash drive a bootable one? If not yet, follow ValkerieFire's instructions (the step 1) on making your flash drive a bootable one on this link.

Try using the other USB 2.0 port, try using a different flash drive or try getting a new copy of the files. That's all what I could think of.

Oh what a pain! Just got my G73JH back from the 2nd RMA in 1 year:

New GPU and Mobo AGAIN !!

This time they (Asus) managed to break the keyboardlight in the process...

Tried everything, except Tilla´s "task planner" fix which is just gibberisk to me, cause I dont have a task planner, I have a task scheduler, but cant find these: "General, Trigger & Action"

Could somebody please clarify this procedure?

    Thanks...

OK, thanks, this procedure is not for me then...

Hardware problem I guess, maybe the tiny connector broke when they removed the KB.

I have the same problem. When I work at night and I'm in a room with little light, start-up is very sad and boring because I'm having to find the right buttons for the login password.
Moreover, prior to this problem, the keyboard light WASN'T ALWAYS ON: it shuts down when the keyboard is not used, and as soon as you pass your hand over the keys, the light came on again.
Before updating the BIOS everything worked perfectly. The ASUS support it's incredible: I don't understand why ASUS not do a BIOS update for a problem caused by the update from an official BIOS!

    P.s.: sorry for my english

I have the same issues as AsILayDaing. My kb light flashes during ASUS logo screen but then it shuts off when windows boots up. And I've tried pretty much everything :(. I have the new vbios version and my bios version is 211 (should I update to 213?). Oh and apparently my other function keys work EXCEPT F4 (yes fn+F3 works, I accidentally hit it too many times and that's why my backlight doesn't work lol) also my fn+F9 doesn't work (which turns off the mousepad) so I don't know what the issue is. Everything was working just fine this morning :(

    EDIT:
Oh and I forgot to mention that I DO have the updated version of ATK package. Also I want to say that this whole mess started for me when I was disabling stuff on startup using msconfig. I accidentally turned off the ATK for startup so I turned it back on. But then I hit fn+f3 too many times and now the backlight won't come back on with fn+F4 heh.

Not really, that's what usually fixes broken ATK, make sure the ATK service is running on tp of the processes, but if you can use the rest, it is running. Hoewever, the fact that Fn F9 doesn't work either makes me think that there is something broken in your installation of ATK. Maybe try v100014.

Shouldn't be, Asus worked out a lot of the "kinks" with the JH, so when the JWs came out, the problems shouldn't have been an issue. If you're having a backlight issue with your keyboard on a JW, it is more than likely a physical issue (something came loose, or the keyboard has failed).

    Hello all,

I've just installed Windows 8 on my ASUS G73SW-BST6, and I'm beginning to regret it. I'm no computer wiz and everything I've read so far seems to be out of my league. After installing Windows 8, my keyboard fn (function) key is useless. I can't seem to get any functionality on the function key, and my keyboard back lights will not turn on. Is there anyway I can restore keyboard function key functionality as well as whatever else is not working?

Please help me with some dumb down instructions as like I said, I'm no computer wiz.

I apologize if I'm posting on the wrong thread, and please point me to the right one as I've been searching for a solution on my issues for the better part of the day already and I'm ready to throw in the towel. Thanks in advance on whoever can help me out.

    Cheers!

ATK version 1.0.0016 worked just fine on my N50Vn and Windows 8 release preview, otherwise, try the latest version available which is at 20 something and should be fully Windows 8 compatible.

Thank you for replying Tijo, but can you break it down to more simpler terms? If it's not asking too much a step by step instruction on what to do, where to download would be awesome. I'm not very technical in terms and know how. I would be truly greatful if you can.

    =)

    Hello everyone,

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone who tried to help me out. I truly appreciate all your effort.

The good news is, that I've finally resolved my issues, and would like to thank auggy from the microsoft community forum for helping me with my issue. Hopefully by re-sharing his advice, I could help someone as well.

He gave me a link for the Windows 8 version of the ATK: I uninstalled the previous ATK, then re-installed the latest version found on the LINK he provided. And looks like everything is working correctly now.

If this solution has worked for anyone, please take the time to thank the person who helped me: auggy - Microsoft Community

Again, thank you for all your support. I truly appreciate everything.

    -Carlo

This fix only works on the G73 and will also work on my Asus N56VZ?
My asus came from technical assistance (put a new motherboard) and now have no lights on the keyboard.
I know you can lose the lights to update the BIOS but it already came with the latest update, 211. Does "lost" the lights when they did the update?
    Help please.

    Thanks

Hi there, I updated to bios 213 and have no lights. Iève followed your instruction to the letter but when I boot from usb my laptop takes a few extra seconds to boot and then proceeds to windows as if nothing was diffrent. I entered the path to my usb as I:\ and set it as boot device 1. Its a bootable usb with the contents of fixmykb extracted onto it. Your help would be a light in my dark nights, literally! Thx.

Theroux92, 2 suggestions, Try pressing ESC and use that menu to select the USB drive to boot from. OR disable all bootable devices in the BIOS except the USB drive and retry.
If both of these do not work try booting another computer with the USB drive just to make sure the software on the USB drive is working properly.
    Welcome to the forum!

If the keyboard does not even light up for a sec right after the post screen, you might want to look over the cable under the keyboard as i did test all of the methods known + Garys fix with no effect what so ever. Turned out for me that the cable was upside down  Of all of the ribbon cable on the G73 series the keyboard light one has to be the one with the mark (how much you can push it in) on the wrong side. :D

Ditto to the Cheers! Still need this darn thing so thanks for uploading again, did the bios update to my G73JH using winflash and KB lights quit working. Hard to find links that work. Hopefully this works. :hi2:

And...after running it got an exit code 0, and upon boot the KB lights flashed on and off as they used to. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! Now to reinstall Win7 64 and all should be good to go.

Edit: And just to confirm, YES this worked after windows was installed. Used the latest ATK driver from here: http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=ATKPackage&p=3&s=480

I made an account just to thank you for this fix. I just bought a refurbished Asus Taichi 21 and the only issue with it was the keyboard backlight not working. After spending days flashing different BIOS versions and ATK drivers I had given up. I was so pissed that I would have to send it back for such a small thing, but I finally tried this fix and it worked perfectly. Thanks so much!

I also updated a upload to get the files check this link:

Hello sirs, I have a G46VW and I have the same problem after a RMA, they changed the MB and now the KB and the touchpad controls no longer work. After tinkering it all day today I finally managed to force start the touchpad controls by installing separate drivers for the touchpad itself along the ATK Package. However I cannot manage to get the KB to work. The only time it lights up is briefly during a force shut down. I've tried all of the ATK Package drivers listed here and on all other forum threads that I found with this issue.

I've tried the above method from Gary Key, although I havent seen anyone here posting about a G46 like me, stil, I cannot get it to boot into MSDOS. Whenever i try, the BIOS just flashes black for a split second and then gets back to the BIOS screen. Could it be because I have a 3.0 USB Flash Drive? Should I try a 2.0? or a MiniSD Card? I'm kind of out of ideas.. I'll be sending it back on the 28th if I cant get it to work, I've already sent them a complaint because besides all this, it came back infected by a trojan.

I've also tried to set it to load the HContol.exe as a task but no luck.

Question I have now is, am I losing my time here, or do I still have a chance to get it working?

Okay, in case other people run into this on their G46. It works, but you definitely need a USB 2.0 thumb drive for it in order to make it boot. Otherwise, the BIOS will read the drive as bootable but it will simply flash a black screen. I used RUFUS, default settings, set to load FreeDOS on the thumbdrive, and after the process was completed, copied the files on the root of the drive. For some reason, while in BIOS I had 2 boot drives for the thumbdrive, just select the first one. It will make you select your keyboard type, mine was european, but I dont think it matters. Write 'flashmykb'. It will respond that it cannot write on the drive. I dont know if it matters, but I thought it didnt work so i ran 'bt' afterwards, and then ran 'flashmykb' again. Then I restarted, and it worked. The lights came on while BIOS was booting up, and once I was in Windows, the FN keys worked as intended.
    Good luck.

Can someone help plz, I try Gary's method but have message "Can't write data" and "Error_code=-1"
Any help to bring my backlit back?
Also I tried revert bios to earlier version but no success with EZflash (won't allow flash older version) and prefer not to try with Winflash /nodata option but this seems to be only way at this point.
I'll be verry thankful for any advice, hardware is G75VW

    hey everyone.
I recently bought an Asus g73jh. the previous owner changed the gpu to 6990m. when it arrived the keyboard backlight didnt work, so I thought I'd give this method a try, unfortunately I keep getting the 7C thing and the lights dont work. I removed the keyboard to see if the cable is plugged in correctly, turns out it was facing the black plastic thing. I changed the orientation of it but it still didnt work. I'm using a kingston 3.0 usb pendrive, I'm not sure if it matters. I will try with a 2.0 one and see if it helps.
does anyone know the solution to the 7C error?

    edit:
I bought a new keyboard and the backlight works now. turns out the old one had the ribbon all messed up.

Hey guys, i have r501vb Asus laptop ( n56vb mobo says in aida and SIW) and at first i did not have backlit Keyboard but i bought one from Amazon and mount it, it had the backlit ribbon slot and everything but it does not work at all. There are no lights blinking on boot(bios check), no activation method available using fn+f4/f3 or anything.
    My question is :
1)why does it have a ribbon slot for backlit and still not work.
2)Why other people who have the same mobo(the only difference between my laptop model and n56vz is that VZ has backlit keyboard and full hd matrix from factory, so mine supposed to be lower model, but still share the same mobo, both having backlit ribbon slot available) but with backlit from factory, same bios and #*%t and it works and i can't get it fixed?

Is because it was made to be without backlit by restricting from bios?
Is there a way to change/activate from bios, for this particular mobo just the backlit like other laptops have?

    Hope you can help me.
    Thanks in advance guys!
