So I successfully disassembled my G73jh-rbbx; the Best Buy one with the 1600x900 screen; and performed a thermal re-paste on the gpu due to idle temps > 67C and continuing problems with GSOD even after the vBios update and Bios 211. All went very well until reassembly when I screwed the rear bezel back on... and right through the LCD ribbon cable! Well, the cable is toast and I'm having a hard time finding a replacement cable. I've checked: screencountry.com, batterycentury.com, and batterystyle.com and while they all sell LCD ribbon cable replacements for ASUS machines; I can't find one specifically for the G73JH. I was wondering if anyone knew of a replacement part number or site or link where I could order one. Typing this with my G73 connected via VGA to an old CRT screen! On the plus side my idle GPU temp is now 55C. At least I did something right! Thanks for any advice.

Congrats on the repaste. Sorry about the cable. Try calling gentechpc and xoticpc they may be able to order them.

lol deja-vu... I replied to your post on asusrog.com. Personally, I'd take the opportunity to upgrade to a good FullHD panel.

My 1080p panel is on its way now, should be here Monday. I can't WAIT.
Anything is better than this AUO crap. There's about 5 particles of dust stuck behind the screen. =/
I hope I get one of the good Hannstar or a good LG panel. We'll see.

The full 1080p panel is very tempting... and only about $140.00 from what I've seen. The biggest problem is that I'd need the ribbon cable for that one too and from what I've found it's out of stock everywhere I can find it! The part number listed on the cable itself that I broke is: 1422-00Q00ASA521KS000849. It seems to be available at retailers online as part number: 1422-00PQ0AS; but out of stock at the 4 online places I've been able to find. (although they seem to be all the same company with different front-end websites!) Anyone know of a different part number designation that might turn up any more results? I contacted ASUS support but got a canned response about RMA'ing the machine. Would they sell me the ribbon cable directly? And whom would I ask that question without getting an RMA response? Thanks.

I don't know if they'll sell it to you directly. Did you contact Gentechpc or Exoticpc to see if they can get you the part?

Got a response from Exoticpc saying that they can't sell me the part if I didn't purchase the machine from them. Awaiting a response from Gentechpc. Kind of a shame that there has to be thousands of proprietary cables out there rather than a few standardised ones! Thanks though; trying to contact ASUS in a few different ways to see if I can get it through them.

You could always try rewiring the cable. Slow and steady, but maybe it's worth it?

As for the FHD screen, yeah. It's TOTALLY worth it.

I've never actually looked at a 1080p laptop display. What is better? Wouldn't the windows desktop just be smaller? Do the games look all that different at 1080 v 1600x900?

Essentially, the FHD screens are of higher quality. Higher color gamut, higher contrast, generally brighter, with superior viewing angles. Not to mention that you're fitting 1920x1080 in the space that you usually have 1600x900, so the picture will be sharper and yes, some elements will appear slightly smaller.

Well, talked to probably the nicest woman in any computer sales dept. anywhere at PowerNotebooks and she says the same as Gentech and ExoticPCs; that they will not sell parts to you if you didn't buy the system from them. The 4 sellers I've found on-line that carry the ribbon cable; (which are actually two companies with 2 different websites each) both are out of stock with unknown restock times. I've PMed several of the ASUS reps that keep up with things in here, so I guess I'll just hope for the best with them. Sad that my notebook is no longer portable; but I did play a few hours of SC2 today with no GSODs and the TS0, 1, 2 sensors never topped 95C. Previously they would top 105C. Thanks for all the advice everyone. BTW, even the AOU 1600x900 screen blows this 20" CRT from 10 years ago out of the water!

Have you tried bringing it back at bestbuy? Maybe they can help. Sorry about your ribbon.

    P_Schneider,

I did; but it was an ordeal! After finding the correct cable from a retailer in the EU I placed my order... then found out it would take about a month to receive it and I could not cancel since it was a special order. So I found a seller on ebay with the correct ribbon cable and bought it, when it came I carefully replaced the part... and the screen stayed blank. So the ebay seller shipped me a new one on the thinking that it was defective, new one didn't make the LCD come on either. BestBuy turned out to be the hero of the story. After reading all my correspondence with ASUS regarding the GSODs that were the reason I tried re-pasting in the first place, they gave me a full refund... which I used to buy a G53 from tigerdirect and lived happily ever after! The online site I ordered the ribbon cable from is Asusparts.eu; I still have the cable!

Hi, I have exactly the same problem as yours. I've got the Asus G73JH notebook and my screen had PSOD rainbow colours even after a vBIOS upgrade (done a long time before without this problem) and a driver update.

I decided to buy another better screen panel (to solve this problem and to upgrade my screen too): the LG WUXGA (1920x1080) Full HD Matte model from https://www.screencountry.com/index.php?section=products&model=G73JH&brand=ASUS.

But this fu***** PSOD problem still remain now (it's not a GSOD which can be fixed with a vBios upgrade, but a PSOD, which is a sh... fu..... problem). Then I thought that was the cable, because I remember that I managed the ribbon on cable connector when I was disassembling the notebook screen. The part number of the video cable is 1422-00PQ0AS, but unfortunately it's out of all website stocks.

Then I found this yesterday: Worlds Greatest Site for Asus Spare Part . On this website all the "part numbers" are wrong. They us their own numbers to classify their products.

I verified if it's this model and it seems to be the right one, referring to the disassembling guide (chapter 2 - page 18): http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...475907-asus-g73-series-disassembly-guide.html . ;) It talks about the famous "LVDS cable", which is exactly the same as mine (and yours certainly).

Then I bought it this morning on asuspart.eu website.
I will let you know if all my super night research on the web was a good thing to do...

Thank you and good luck too with this fist-fu..... machine.

Ummmmm ok dunno what he is doing but ok, reflowing or summit, looks dangerous to the lovely chipset. :D

Psychedelic Screen of Death is normally a busted screen it has nothing to do with the GPU.

You need to get a replacement screen I would think not blow torch the Core.
