LG vs. AUO Screen Best Buy G73JH (We may have found a way!)

As many of you know there are different screens being shipped with the G73JH-RBBX05 amongst the Best Buy stores.

One is manufactured by LG and the other AUO (AU Optronics.)

The purpose of this thread is to distinguish between the two without even opening the box. We already know 2 ways of telling which screen it has by:

The stickers being on the left or right side of the laptop. (People reporting this may no longer be valid.)
    • From what we can tell so far, all stickers on the right side have been LG's. Stickers on the left can be either LG or AUO.

[IMG] (Still need an AUO pic)

The other way is by going into Device Manager > Monitors > Generic PnP Monitor >Properties > Details > Hardware Ids

[IMG] (Still need an AUO pic)

Now we are working on a way to determine the screen without opening the box. So far the conclusion has been:

    LG Model: P/O # J0X-9Cxxxx (9C8253, 9C6078) All 9C's reported have been LG's. (I would consider this proven.)

    • We also have one report of a J0X-013243 with an LG. Stickers on the left side with 1333mhz memory. (Credit to AV1611.)

AUO Model: P/O # J0X-0xxxxx (6 numbers, 0 letters, mostly likely starting with the number 0.) (So far, 021979, 021993)

    • Just remember there has been a report of a J0X-0xxxxx with an LG. Still trying to determine this one. Maybe J0X-01xxxx for LG and J0X-02xxxx for AUO.
I would like to get more numbers from other members to further prove these findings.

[IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

We also know the RAM varies amongst the laptops.

All AUO's reported have been coming with 1333mhz memory.

LG's have been having mixed reports.
    • J0X-9C8253 - All 1333mhz so far. (I would consider this proven.)
    • J0X-9C6078 - 5 reports of 1066mhz. (Credit to stubbornswiss, panzer06, skygunner27, _Lightning_, and apachehavok.) (I would consider this proven.)

    Conclusion:
If you're going to purchase the G73JH-RBBX05 from Best Buy and would like to know what screen/memory you are getting without opening the box, I would follow these guidelines:
Look at the sticker on the side of the box and find the P/O #. It should start with J0X. This is what you should expect to get:

    • J0X-9C8253 - LG Screen with 1333mhz memory
    • J0X-9C6078 - LG Screen with 1066mhz memory
    • J0X-0xxxxx - More than likely an AUO screen but with 1333mhz memory. If by a rare chance it is an LG screen, it should still have 1333mhz memory.

Assuming you are reading this thread because you are concerned with what screen you are getting.
    • If you are set on getting the LG screen and don't care about the speed of the ram, I wouldn't settle for anything other than a J0X-9Cxxxx box.
    • If you have your heart set on an LG with 1333mhz memory, then search for J0X-9C8253.

As I posted in the other thread, both local BestBuy stores have demo models with LG panels. One store's demo model with LG panel has the stickers on the right (like mine) and the other store's demo model with LG panel has them on the left. My AUO panel G73 that I returned had them on the left.

I think the JOX code on the sticker on the box is the closest we have come to determining which panel you will get. However, I am concerned that these may be the first batch and that in time, we may find that the JOX code no longer helps with panel identification.

As I understand the G73JHs started shipping with 1066, and moved to 1333 for the most part (I'm referencing the A1/A2s)

I have an A2, but my stickers are on the Left :D

Appears to be Acer then :D

They are supposed to be 1066. The first few that shipped, mine included in the first 3 received here on NotebookReview came with 1333. We were told by resellers they suspected Asus ran out of 1066.

So no matter when, if they have 1066 in stock they will ship with that. They will ship with 133 if they don't have any in stock.
    - As the A1 were shipped later than the A2 and I have read A1 users with 1066 ram and A2 users etc.
    - This was applied to N71 model and other models also. Just depends on Asus stock on ram I guess....

That's my guess. Luck of the draw.

The A2 is a 1080p screen. This thread is regarding the Best Buy model which is 1600x900. Not the same laptop.

So is the LG screen used for the later batch of G73's, or is it random to receive the AUO/LG?

I bought a G73-jh from Best Buy this week. Stickers are on the left side (Core i7, Windows 7, ATI 5870, EAX 4.0). No big sticker like in some pictures. I have DDR3 1333 and an LG screen (according to Device Manager). Yay for me!!! Box says J0X-013243.

I must say that I love the 1600x900 resolution. The 5870 mobility might be the most powerful single GPU solution in laptops right now, but it's not even as fast as a desktop 5770. 1920x1080 is just too much for it with games like Crysis. 1600x900 only has about 69% of the number of pixels of 1080p. That's a big help in games like Crysis.

    AV1611 out....

P.S.: This thing rocks! Way nicer than my old Dell Studio 1555 with ATI 4570.

Hmmm, this seems to break the LG identity pattern. Alas, there may never be a foolproof method to determine the screen type without turing it on.

maybe not since there is not a report of an auo having the jox-9cxxxx number type so it may just mean its a higher chance of getting a lg screen with the jox-9cxxxx number than the jox-0xxxxx number.

not trying to bring up anyone's hopes though :p

So, are the AUO screens really that inferior to the LG? If so, I wonder if the inferiority is really obvious at lower resolutions like 1600x900.

i personally have no experience with them, however from all the reviews i have read, between the lg and the auo, the auo is by far the worst screen anyone has ever had to look at. (sorry for exaggeration if any)

but yes, i will not be getting mine till prolly next week when i leave for the US.

edit: i believe both are of the 1600x900 the only brand monitor for the g73 that is not 16:9 is the hannstar in the a1,a2, x1 and x3 with 1920x1080 (1080p)

    fixed :p

Ok.......so below is my CPU-Z memory screen.

According to this, what exactly is my RAM speed?

Also, I confirm I have the "LGD01DD" screen.

Mine has the 4 smaller stickers on the right, without the large, rectangular one.

    Sticker on box: JOX-9C6078.

    Again, pls. excuse my ignorance.

Dual channel x DRAM frequency = approximate speed.

Or, check the SPD tab and look for the information in Part Number field.

approx 8 days before i can add anymore confirmation on 9C being LG with all that has been put up already.

now only question is since i do not know how the US operates, am i allowed to keep asking for boxes till i get one with JOX-9C8xxx as the serial number? or can i specifically ask for a box with JOX-9C8xxx on the side? and how would i know if the box had been tampered with is another question.

wouldn't want them to think that i know a possible store secret and they try to pull a switch on me >_<

I don't know your situation but at the stores I've been to, I don't think it would have been a problem. Basically, all the same model laptops are kept right next to each other. Just have them pull a J0X-9Cxxxx box. If they don't have any, then I wouldn't buy one and go hit up another Best Buy and try your luck.

Apparently the AUO display is more costlier than the LG one.

Does the lower brightness on the AUO screen has something to do with the longevity of the screen(lower brightness and hence more longer lasting)?

    Read this thread
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...el-due-inferior-auo-screen-vs-lg-display.html

Read this thread, mainly the posts made over the last week or so:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/462501-g73-best-buy-info-thread.html

For most people, the LG panel is much better than the AUO panel. I know for me personally, I'd rather not have a G73 with an AUO panel but there have been a few who said they are perfectly fine with the AUO panel.

I think it is more likely that if you have owned a laptop in the past with a really good LCD panel in it, you are more likely to notice the issues with the AUO panel very quickly. In my opinion though, the LG panel G73 that I own now is considerably better than the AUO panel G73 that I returned.

That being said, the LG panel is still not as good as higher end laptop panels like the MacBook Pro and other high-end laptops. Then again, you get what you pay for.

As for the memory, most people (and I mean almost everyone) will not notice a big difference in the speed. Mine has the 1066 memory but my G73 works great and I have no intentions of returning it.

+1 for this. My works fine. no fresh install, a few uninstalls and a couple of mods later, works great!

I've only had one glitch. The first time I connected HDMI to HD monitor the system rebooted repeatedly playing the startup tone over and over. Pulled the cable and it worked fine. Only happened that one time so I considered it an anomaly and moved on.

    Cheers,

Many people claim that the 1066 RAM will actually perform a bit better real-world because of better timing specs (something about latency, I believe?) than the 1333. As always, your mileage may vary (YMMV).

They all say "Generic PnP Monitor". If you are using the Device Manager method, what you want is the hardware ID property. Alternatively, you can right-click on the Desktop, select "Screen Resolution" and read the Display field. My G73JH has a HannStar display, so mine reads HSD173PUW1.

Please read all the steps in the first post. You failed to continue after you got to Generic PnP Monitor.
