So I was explaining to my friends why I was selling this laptop, and switching to a mac. I had told them the asus keeps freezing and I'm sick of it, when one of them says to try to blow the vents out... Now I had done this a long time ago, but I forgot to keep doing it from time to time! So I did, and 2 days now, no freezing.... I'm still going to sell it, as my macbook pro is on the way, but I wanted to pass this along to help others.

Thanks for the advice. Dust does build up in the vents a lot faster then people expect and that is the number one cause for overheating which is probably what was causing the overheating.
Good advice though! -
I keep rebooting, to try and make it stop working again, the "not responding" windows lol... but it's working 100% so far, three reboots in a row, with and without the plug!
after cleaning the whole thing with some rubing alcohol and cotton, it looks almost new! I kind of want to keep it now! I'm afraid windows will once again let me down some how and start with the bugs and such, I was really looking forward to jumping to OSX, but now, I dont know... -
Yeah, I can't deal with Mac OS... First thing I did when my wife got a macbook air was to install Windows 7, and not even via parallels. I like the Mac hardware, but I'd much rather have a Windows 7 PC.
I wouldn't trade my G73 for any MAC based device. It's not Windows that's going to let you down in any case, it's hardware, and you can have the same problems with a MAC. -
Macs have been known to overheat plenty, keep that in mind. Compact design and good cooling don't mix well.
I would never dream of exchanging my perfectly working g73 for an underpowered and overpriced Macbook. -
Does the G53jw accumulate dust inside that fast as well? Cuz the g53 has a very fine mesh covering the vents unlike the g73 and also, there are no openings on the underside of the laptop.

Well my g53 hasn't getting dust in the vents.
Heat system is different indeed althought the SW does have some small openings on the service panel too.
I guess is less prone to dust, but also I'm using a laptop cooler as well, as for now in topping 85c under gaming with gaming clocks in sig and overvolted bios, I think temps are fine.
General gaming and usage reports around 70-75c, I reach those temps only when pushing the gpu at 99% like no vsync and benchmarking. -
I just swung by today because my G73 has started freezing and hanging and I wanted to see if anyone else was having this issue since the last round of MS patching.
This thread reminded me that I haven't cleaned out the vents since I bought the system back in Feb. -
Me too. Just noticed that there is dust collected on the outer part of the vent. So I'm 100pc sure there's dust inside as well. But the funny part is I've got really good idle and load temps. CPU and GPU both idle at around 45-48C and at load (playing gta4 for a minimum of 4 hours on the highest setting), CPU temp is around 80C and GPU simply refuses to cross 84C.

My sisters got two mac book pro notebooks, she really loves them and knows nothing about computers and so shes managed to not screw one up yet.
I was thinking about buying a macbook pro when I was looking at this Asus G73J, but for the money to get a mac that did what my Asus G73J does I was looking at 2500 dollars at the time. you see apple price fixes everything they make there money on hardware and give the software away. so they stick it to you on price. the other problem with macs is you can't open them. you can't even take the battery out if you run into problems, there is no easy way to open up a mac book pro. so your dealing with apple or a apple store to get even a simple thing such as ram added to one.
another thing I like about macs is they give you a disc with the os on it, and didn't install lots of useless software junkware as they call it.
but the asus G73jh has been a dream computer. I've had no problems with it what so ever, and it's ran every game like a dream, up on tell rage came out. but I'm not sure I am going to risk fate and flash my vbios just to play that game. If it was any other computer game maybe but Not ID's rage.
I know I am not missing anything there.
so yes get a apple if it makes you feel better and your having a problem with your asus notebook, by all means. but understand you got a lemon and not all asus notebooks are the same. I wound not trade you a macbook pro for my asus G73jh. sorry. I am glad I got it. -
No, my asus G73 is not a lemon... not any more
track pad is the last thing to fix, other than that, this computer has ran like a grand champ! I love this computer, I have had my problems, but one by one they are getting fixed..
I told ASUS to look at my trackpad when I sent it in to the RMA, but they did not and now it's to late. -
Well, at least the touchpad is an easy fix... I think it took me like 20 minutes to tear down and remove all the crap under my touchpad.
It's also not a bad time to clean the stuff that's harder to get at when things are together. -
Can some one make a video on how to do this??
-
Yeah, the G73 for me had a few small issues here and there but overall is easily the best laptop I've ever owned. I won't be selling it for a long time.
Gotta agree with Sarge, paying MORE money for a gutless MacBook just doesn't seem right. -
I cant understand how people are okay paying MORE for a computer that still wont even run all the software out there. People at my college have macbooks, and they cant even run 3dsmax OR PRETTY MUCH ANY GAME without dual booting. Jokes on them I guess.
If they were actually a competitive price with similar PCs I could see people getting one. They are well built and compact, but I dont see how that alone justifies the $2000+ pricetag. -
How did you fix your touchpad? i am still having issues with it? what did you remove?
