Is it a fair statement that a person can only get about 70% desktop type proformance from a top of the line Laptop??
In other words I will never get desktop proformance from a laptop.

You could... if you get a recent Crossfire or SLI setup in the notebook

Key word is consumer laptop. I've seen some beastly "desktop replacement" creations, that are basically laptop exoskeletons with desktop components in them. Not fun to carry, and you can't set it "on top of you lap" (some like it hot)...but it beats the heck out of a tower with a handle on it, if you're a lan-party fanatic.

Most high-end laptops kick the hell out your average user's desktop but yeah a high end desktop>>high end laptop. Mobile tech is always going to be a step behind because of obvious reasons but the most obvious being is "How do I fit this stuff into a really small case?".

You can get a great DTR laptop, but as Kuro said .... high end desktop has more power draw and temperature control to play with.
Basically, dollar for dollar, the desktop will beat the pants off the laptop. But a dual CF/SLI laptop will be better than most desktops sold at bestbuy.
Heck, the g73 is better than most desktops they sell, too. -
I have a G73JW that has the N 460 and a desk top that has a ATI 5870 in it and frame rates in desktop are about 40 % better same game on each same settings 65Fps DT to about 38 FPS LT.
It don't really surprise me as how would one fit the stuff in my desk top into a laptop. -
G73 shouldnt have any problems running any current game at good settings. Thing is you cant really upgrade it like you can a desktop and if you use it like a desktop replacement the wire clutter is all up in your face unlike a desktop that usually sits away from you. Ive been looking to trade mine for a equivalent desktop for a while but im having a hard time parting with it.

The desktop 5870 and Notebook 5870 are actually different cards, with different GPU cores. So you can't compare it that way.
Also, you havn't mentioned your CPU either. -
My friend built a cheap desktop with a Q9300 and a GTS 250 and it is about even with my laptop in games. Hes is going to get a GTX 560 soon and I wont be able to keep up.
-
I guess I wouldn't say its even but it comes close. In newer games like bad company 2 my g73 is better for sure. Less power bills is also a very good plus I forgot about.

+Rep for you.. in your face. -
I prefer being mobile much more than stationary and if that means I take a performance hit, so be it
Gaming Laptops FTW -
Well, i need to move it around, like bringing to a friend's place for some L4D2.
A desktop cant do that as easily as a G73. -
I prefer hanging out on my couch, so a desktop isn't really ideal. A lack of space, lack of money, and a requirement to have something mobile so I can go back and forth to school made this laptop a huge plus for me. While I've had some troubles with it, it does what I need it to do.
-
I had two reasons for buying a laptop instead of a desktop:
1 - portability (try transporting a desktop to your friend's place if you don't have a car...)
2 - i'm a grad student and the university was willing to pay for a laptop but not a desktop, they ended up paying for around 2/3 of my G73
Even if you can't get a desktop's performance, what you can get out of a gaming laptop isn't bad either. -
I only had one reason for getting the g73. It was free! I would have ended up with a sub-par desktop if i didnt get it. Very happy with it even tho i havent moved it off the cooler since i got it.

There will never be a Laptop that will take the place of my desktop for gaming..
That being said there are places I go that I need to take a Laptop and this is why I got one.
May not be as good as my desktop but this G73JW is very good and can play all my games as of today may not be 75 FPS to 100 FPS but plays most at 30 FPS + and that is very good for a laptop.
Anything over 25 FPS will do the human eye can not see the difference from 50 to 25 FPS -
If you want a closer enough performance to desktop, just spend over 2000 bucks (at least) and get a huge and heavy non-portable brick with sli/crosfire configuration and do not expect to find easily something below 17 inches.
