Well, recently I repasted my GPU. Temps dropped 20 C +, but now after about 4 days, while playing black ops, my laptop just 'shut down'. I hit the power button, no LEDs flash like they would if it was some sort of over heating issue. The battery charge indicator is on, but when i hit the power button, it goes off for a couple of seconds, then comes back on. I let it sit for about an hour to see if it was just a dead battery but nothing. I took the HDD cover off and I could smell a slight smell that you would smell if a circuit fried or something. i think he mobo is dead. Should I just send it in to ASUS?, and if I do, how long does it take to get it back,...spring semester starts next wednesday and I really need my laptop.

Also, what do they do about your hard drive? Will I be asked to take it out before I send it? It has TONS of personal data on it.

    I used IC diamond.

    Poor motherboard. :(

Yeah, no matter how good the deal is at BB, you always end up paying a steep price for shopping there. And yeah, BB can sell cheap asus laptops because asus doesn't allow BB laptops to be serviced under warranty BY asus. They basically tell best buy that "sure, you can sell these cheap - but if it breaks, *YOU* have to provide the fix".

I'm just waiting for them to charge me for something. The sticker on the bottom of my laptop doesn't say 12M warranty for nothing. I figure that a motherboard replacement is beyond their technical capabilities so I hope I can just grab a new one, and hopefully it will have the 5870m.

I didn't purchase any warranty from BB.

No ASUS will fix BestBuy G73's as they fixed mine, Bestbuy in my area would not fix the systems and kept sending them back. ASUS support fixed the system,

If you take it back to BestBuy and they give you any issues then call ASUS support back and tell them what is up and they will fix the unit.

There are many here where I live that have had to do this.

This is the last system that will be bought at BestBuy by me and I make sure to tell everyone I can not to Buy form BestBuy in less there is no other way to get something, you can be sure that you will wish you had not if you do. They have to be one of the worst company's to work with, and the Managers will tell you anything to get you to go away if you have an issue . That is in less you buy there Ins. that is one fourth the cost of a brand new computer! You save nothing and get less on your system.

Best Buy is going to send it to ASUS and it will be back by the 24th, so appx 2 weeks 2 days. I'm guessing since the motherboard is dead (what i presume, not them) I might get a whole new laptop. If that is the case, I'm going to sell it right away and build me another desktop computer. I built one before but sold it for a laptop for college. Now I realize that I really don't need a laptop for college since I never take it out. I go to a military school so we try to avoid running into anyone who is not freshman, even if that means not leaving your room to go to the library, etc. If this were a computer I built, I could have individually tested each part, and I could replace my motherboard cheap and easily. I looked up the G73 mobo, $480 on the only website that carried it. That's 3 times more expensive than some top of the line desktop mobo's. And I'm not even that kind of guy. I go for mid road mobo's on the AMD platform like the 890gx. I had an Asus 790gx in my old desktop, and I bet that thing is still running strong.

Also, I think ASUS kind of brought them upon themselves. The crazy amount of heat generated from the previous pasting jobs they did is probably what caused the mobo to die. It was running like that for a couple months until I fixed it.

But this is just one more reason to build your own and to NEVER buy prebuilt computers. I probably won't buy another laptop computer, nothing against ASUS, because I will still buy ASUS motherboards.

Oh yeah, Geek squad asked to back up my data for $100. My jaw dropped.
