I have a G51VX RX05 that is a couple years old. It's had some problems but generally worked fine but now all of the sudden the computer stopped going to sleep. One day I opened a video in VLC, paused it and closed the screen but the laptop would not sleep. It just sat there with all of the lights on, the fan and HDD still running and everything. I haven't done anything to the computer recently, just one day it stopped going to sleep.
This is a very frustrating issue as I like to use my laptop to listen to music/radio/watch something as I fall to sleep and have the computer sleep sometime after a little bit. With the Asus when the fan kicks on it's pretty much louder than my desktop and is quite bright which makes this issue a pain for me.
If anyone has any ideas on what may cause this any advice would be appreciated.

Did you uninstall the video drivers? when there are no video drivers, the system cannot go to sleep
-
No I didn't uninstall the video drivers, or any drivers for that matter they are all on there and functioning properly according to device manager.
The only thing I uninstalled between this happening was an expired Norton, and if I need Norton on my computer to allow it to sleep then....=\ -

Try uninstalling and reinstalling power4gear. Also check your event logger, sometimes problems with suspend can show up there.

Really not sure what is up with this. I uninstalled Power4Gear and rebooted the computer. When I turned it back on, I closed the lid and it went to sleep, okay. Then I changed the power plan from basic to performance since it was defaulted to basic after removing the Asus program. After I did this, the laptop would not go to sleep again. I changed it back to basic and checked all of the settings in the power plans and everything looks the way it should be. It just went to sleep once and now won't do it again. Guess I'll reinstall Power4Gear and try again.
I'm thinking about just doing a clean install of Windows 7 and see if that will sort everything out. I'm not too much of a fan of Vista and I have some other minor problems like not being able to stay connected to the internet. Think it might be my best bet.
Edit: There are options about closing the lid and going to sleep in both power4gear and the windows power plans and I had both set to "sleep" when lid is closed, as well as "sleep" when power button is pressed. No matter which way I tried the computer didn't want to sleep.
Also it will sleep if I choose "sleep" through the start menu, but when I press any of the buttons that are supposed to make it sleep, or close the lid it doesn't. -
Windows 7 runs without a hitch for me, so that may just wok out for you
