    Hello

I recently installed a Crucial m4 ssd into my G53SW-XN1 as its primary boot drive and kept the hard drive that came with the laptop as a secondary storage drive. For some reason when I turn the laptop on after it has been off for awhile it does not fully boot, it will show the ASUS (inspiring innovation / persistence perfection) screen but then it moves to an all black screen and does not boot. If I hit f2 and enter bios right after the ASUS bios graphic, then exit without changing anything it will boot to windows just fine after asking me to choose between two different win7 options.

Any ideas or brainstorms on how to resolve the issue would be greatly appreciated.

Also; this may be a dumb question but do I need windows installed on my secondary drive to load programs and/or use it for general storage, or can I format it and start fresh on my secondary hard drive.

    Thanks-

Yes you can (and IMO) Should format the second HDD - that way you will not see 2 win 7 boot options.
But first remove the second HDD (not the SSD) and see and test to see if the boot issue is resolved.
    Or try swapping the drives.
I would also set the BIOS to all defaults (there S/B a setting in the BIOS do do this) and test
Lastly if you do not want to format the 2nd drive, enter the BIOS and disable it as a boot option.

    Thanks Josea!
Well I formatted the second drive but when I reboot it still gives me the two win 7 options. One simply says Windows 7, the other says Windows 7 Home Premium (Recovered). Any idea on how to get rid of this or what it is?

Glad to help out, Boot to windows open run - msconfig - boot tab - there you should see the 2 options - delete the one you do not use.

The only other thing I can think of is to swap the 2 hard drives from one connector to the other. (I assume you have reset BIOS to all defaults)

Awesome, that took care of the dual win 7 boot options, but when I shut down the laptop and later turn it back on it still will not boot past the bios Asus screen. If I am only rebooting it continues to boot fine, but booting from being completely shut down is another story.

crucial m4 requires a firmware update to work correctly. if your drive shipped with firmware 00001 you need to flash it to 00002. This can cause a variety of problems on many different notebooks with the same chipset. micron / crucial is aware of this hence the recent price drop in this lemon of a drive

Well thats no good, how would I go about updating the firmware to 00002? Would it require a clean install on my ssd?

crucials website has the update and instructions. you do not have to reinstall windows. Before you do this make sure to reset bios to factory defaults, nothing in bios should be altered... ever
