DVD drive just died. Listened to a CD and installed Risen and now it doesn't read any disc. Spins, but doesn't read.

Is there anything I should do to the laptop as far as securing identity [steam account and such] or is there a possibility I'd get mine own back?

keep the hard drives generally, can't you just take it to best buy and they give you another one?

    (again, keep the hard drives)

But they [best buy] will want to check it out before they send it [I got the 2yr warraty w/hazzard. Good thing now I guess], so they will have to turn it on. Will they take the HDD out for me after they check it out?

Stay with them while they are doing I guess, when they decide to replace it, inform them that you are keeping the hard drives due to the data.

I don't know what they'll do, but normally it's fine (they'll take the hard drives out of the new one and put them in your dead one for return to ASUS)

I fixed it for now. The lens was stuck in the same spot and I just shoved the lens to the outmost point out of spite and now it is reading discs again.

I beat it into submission. I wonder how long that will last.

Might get stuck again later down the road. At least Asus uses a generic DVD drive that you can buy aftermarket for cheap.

yep, or a good excuse to throw in a Blu-Ray drive off of ebay when it dies... I snagged one for about $60 for my G51 that is now in my G73 that works great.
