I was hoping that we could start a list of programs that don't work on asus stock drivers on the g73 - it would be a good way of explaining to asus that our G73 vbios *NEEDS* to be fixed, not just patched until we're all out of warranty.

Advanced GPU tools aren't available in Photoshop with stock Asus drivers. Kinda drives me nuts since they're helpful. Have to set GPU enhancement to basic to keep things working.
-
Yeah no clue why it does that on stock. But all the other drivers working fine for Adobe products

Anyone try FF with 10.8 btw?
Some people were able to get into beta yesterday when the servers were getting slammed -
Maya 2011, according to a gentleman on the ROG forums.

Really, there should be ZERO programs that don't run on the g73 - I would *never* buy a piece of hardware that I *knew* was locked into a certain set of drivers unless I also *knew* that it was going to be running the same thing (like a POS - point of sale... the g73 GSOD GPUs are a different type of POS).
-
I've been playing FFXIV on 10.7a, only experiencing some crashes because its a beta (FFXIV that is), my brother is currently playing FFXIV on 10.8 (he has a G73 also) all day, no crashes at all, not even a flicker (he clocked to 705/1100).

Google Talk - completely freezes/crashes Windows.

yahoo messenger 10, completly freeze, have to force shutdown
-
I've had no issues with FFXIV...run everything on high settings, and max possible resolution...always smooth...and yes i am using a g73jh...I can also use those advanced gpu tools in photoshop.

Have you guys upgraded to the newest realtek audio drivers? R2.51 That solves a lot of freezing problems.
Realtek choose HD Audio Codecs -
And I don't have issues with Photoshop either. -
I can't get photoshop elements 9 to install. -

I have the last driver version for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870, driver version 8.770.0.0.
Still when I try to install photoshop it get to the end of the install puts an icon on my desktop, trys to register and then starts the roll back to uninstall. -
That sounds like the default action for an install of photoshop that adobe believes to be pirated. In fact, it sounds like you didn't patch your hosts file correctly, too, because adobe will catch a deactivated/inactivated/incorrect key long before that ... unless you're using a modified installer.
So.
Doesn't seem like a hardware problem to me. Seems like a pebkac error. -
It's a purchased program but I've tried to install it with the serial number and as a trial, with no luck either way. Adobe tech support hasn't figured out either.
-
god bless your thread if it helps in starting garry a proper working vbios

I have uninstalled every Adobe program on the laptop as well as other programs. I've setup a new user account, turned off al virus programs. Gone into msconfig and shut every thing down except the microsoft programs.
I installed this photoshop on my old Sony Viao running Vista with no problems but I bought the ASUS G73 for more power. So I can't figure out why it installs on a Sony but not on the ASUS. They are both running many of the same programs. As I said Adobe tech support can't figure it out and they even took over my laptop over the internet to try. I was just wondering if anyone has installed Photoshop elements 9 on their G73, at least if they have then I would know that it's not a hardware issue. I even updated the bios to 213 with no improvement in the Photoshop install problem. -
The problem you're describing is in no way linked to hardware... unless it's a bad hard drive. So, no matter how you cut it, it is *not* an asus problem.
It is a software problem, plain and simple. Do a fresh install, update your drivers, bios and video bios, then try again.
You can't install good software on a bad install and expect it to work. -

Thanks, I've done everything else except wipe the HD. I've scanned with 2011 bitdefender several times with no virus found.
So I guess I'll wipe the HD and try the install without anything else installed. -

Alot of great information here on these forums but wanted to know the final verdict with the G73 and Maya 2011. I am looking to purchase a new G73 with the i7 2630QM & GTX 460M for my daughter who is going to college and thinks she wants to learn animation. Dont really want to spend the money on a Thinkpad with the Maya approved GPUs and then she decide that animation isnt her thing. The G73 looks like a great machine with this combination of CPU/GPU and can do alot but reading all the literature at the Autodesk Maya website makes be wonder if Maya will run OK since the GTX 460M isnt even one of the tested Consumer Graphics Cards. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance

VLC Media Player works but doesnt work properly.

Mac programs, definitely.
-
VLC works fine... not sure what you're doing wrong, but it isn't hardware.

If you read the original post, this was started because asus hadn't released a vbios that could handle the newer ATI drivers.
Now that it has, all these software problems are JUST software problems. -
You may get a performance boost using a modded Quaddro Driver release instead of using the consumer drivers.
List of programs that don't work on the g73...
