Hey I've had a look around but its hard finding one of these for sale in Canada let alone in stock.

Do any of you guys know somewhere I can get one?

I want to get it in Canda if possible to avoid duty/taxes etc importing it in.

    Thanks in advance.

PS if this is in the wrong forum could you please advise and move to where its meant to be.

    Thanks so much

I had a look at some from the US, and I foudn one that came to just under 1600US with Blue ray and 8GB shipped up to canada, but then I found out ill be in for another 200ish if not maybe a little more to get it into the country. Which is why im looking at my options inside Canada.

And driving to the US frmo where I am will probably be 100 ish is petrol anyway (return trip).

    Thanks

There are no duty fees on technology from the US. Also vouching for gentech, if you want it quick get the express shipping which includes brokerage fees.

Oh, sorry I'm new to this I don't really know/understand what extras there will be. One guy from a US store said I would be up for HST + GST + duty's, it all sounded so much more expensive.

So what will I actually be up for if I live in BC, do I just then pay HST (12%?) on top of whatever it is for the laptop costs + shipping?

    Or is there something else?

I'll see if they have any in stock, most places I've seen haven't got it in stock. Ideally if I could I would pref to get the -A1 model with BT, 8GB of 1333 and a Blue Ray optical as options.

I believe its HST on top of the laptopcost with shipping.
If VooDooi can verify this, that would be nice.

Considering no reseller has the actual computers in stock, I think the best option is buying a QHDA1 which has everything you ask for except 4gb ram. 2X2gb 1333 ram is 90shipped to Toronto from gentech (I PMed all other resellers on the forum and noone else has responded yet)

Yeh the QHDA1 looks good. I'm going to go with that.

My last PC didn't even use 2GB's RAM (winXP Pro), not sure about win7 on boot, but ill see hour 4gb goes, if it feels like it could do with some more ram, it snot expensive as you said.

I remember the days when 256MB of ram was ~$250, and that was cheap, times are a changing ~_^...

You Guys are fantastic, thanks so much for your help.

Total cost is laptop base + HST (or gst only if you don't have HST) + shipping + possible brokerage fees.

Base cost and tax is obvious enough, shipping and brokerage sort of tie in together. Some people (like me) had to pay the standard $5 + 40something gst (ordered before HST went into effect :D) at the door, others have had to pay an additional ~$80 for brokerage/courier fees. It's pretty random and annoying. You can avoid brokerage by either going with express shipping, or having it shipped with usps/canada post, which is a fair bit slower. Time is money and all...

So I was looking at the XR1.

And although its 1349, I called one of the guys from NCIX, and after taxes + shipping its going to come to just under $1550.

Ok so I just read that other post again, which answered the question, sorry.

Do you guys thinks that is agood deal for the XR1 or do you think I should just go for the other -A1?

Any advice on this... I can't decide if its worth another 150-200 (+tax) for -a1.

    Thanks again!

Huh? I don't think I've heard of etailers rejecting CC's based on country of origin, it's not like you're ordering from nigeria. You should try and contact ken directly, either on these forums or on gentech's site. You could also just make a paypal account and link up your CC through them, it's pretty quick and free.

Depends what you need, A# models come with a bag + semi-crap mouse + more ram + second hdd bracket. X# models is just the laptop itself. Unless you already have a bag kicking around or an SSD prepared I find the A# models to be better.

Yeh I think I'll make a Pay Pal account seems like the easiest way.

I mean if I went into a store, they wouldn't reject my CC, but online it seems to be a different matter.

I have no bag, and no second HDD.

I'm leaning towards to -a1, but can you just clarify for me, with the XR1 its exactly the same machine(obviously without the bag and mouse), SO if I wanted to at a later time I could buy a blue ray optical, a bluetooth and upgrade the RAM and there'd be no difference but the HDD capacity, and there's still room/capability for another HDD anyway, right or?

What's Kens user name on here? I'll have a chat to him tonight.

    Thanks

Like I said it won't come with a 2nd HDD bracket, so installing another HDD isn't as simple as just popping it in like with an A model, you need to either buy a bracket or make one out of cardboard or something.

I dont understand, the A1 comes with 1 bracket as well.
I got this unit for pick up tommorow
    LU Computers
    cheaper than PCcanada.
exacly what you wanted minus 4 gigs of ram (ram is the cheapest to upgrade)

I just ordered the XR1 from NCIX when I found it for only $1219 CAD here and price matched with NCIX. Price matching with ncix is easy it was approved within minutes. Easy way to save 130 bucks and puts it at $330 less than the A1. Can always (quite cheaply) add more ram later on if 4GB isn't enough.

Actually according to the A1 review by xoticpc on youtube it doesn't have a 2nd bracket either and they mentioned that they had to order them. A1 = single 750gb drive, XR1 = single 500gb drive.

    Nice, grats on your order.

I know what you're saying I guess thats a 330 difference now makes it harder to justify!

I was thinking it was worth 200 more for

    Blue ray drive
    larger HDD
    Bluetooth
    back pack + mouse

but now I hears its a 330 difference that makes things a little harder to decide.

I do need a bag for it, what are you going to do for a bag, do you have something else in mind?

The price after pricematch is very very very good!
    1 problem with XR1 though
It only comes with 1 year defect warranty I believe.
Check with NCIX before because their spec chart makes it look like you have 2yr warranty, and the description makes it look like you have 1 year warranty with accidental damage covered, and the title just says 1 year warranty.

If XR1 comes with just 1 year defect,(no acidental) I am not sure if I would be content on buying the system. (my 2 previous laptop broke down after 1 year but before the 2nd year)

    330 difference?
I only see 225 dollar difference.
    1475
    1220
I think 225 for backpack/mouse/bt/+250gb/bluray/extra-year-warranty is very reasonable

If you mean 330 difference for the JW-A1 model,
it doesnt come with bluray but with 2gb more ram and I was able to get ncix to price match lucomputers cash price of 1465.74

I talked to NCIX about this today. The guy wasn't sure about the limited part of teh global warranty I forgot to ask about the accidental dmg warranty... Although my last laptop lasted me 5 years, I know this is real rare, the accidental dmg sounds very tempting... That in it self is worth a bit.

You think you'd need to contact asus to find out what the limited global warranty is. (for me that's imoportant)

"Warranty & e-support 2-year limited global hardware warranty
    *different by country
    1-year battery pack warranty
On-line problem resolution through web interface (BIOS, Driver update)
OS (Microsoft Windows 7) install/uninstall consultation
    Bundled software install/uninstall consultation
    ASUS software supporting"

i can't pay cash I'm in BC. Id have to use pay pal. and my canadian bank account isn't setup yet.

if you go through the payment process, the LU -a1 comes to 1,740.46 including expedited shipping. While the one I was quote from NCIX came to 1549 or something.

Now this guy is saying he got it prices matched from anotehr site for 130 less.

1740-1549 + the extra 130 is 320 difference. That's been sent to my door!

for the price difference it would make sense...

I guess if its a once in a 3/4/5 year purchase (hopfully it lasts that long) then the extra 320 is very reasonable, especially for the extra upgrades you get + accessories.

I'm leaning towards the -A1, jsut because id like the extra stuff with no hassle attached to it, and for me coming from where I live I reckon this machine would easily come in at 2-2.5k the XR1 just sounds like such a good deal! I'm having to dig deep...

    dammit....

I already have a case I can use so that extra was less incentive for me.

Regarding the warranty of the XR1, I do think it is only 1 year instead of 2, so for a lot of people the extra warranty is worth money too. For me, my credit card adds an extra 12 months on top of manufacturer warranty so it didn't bother me as much.

Once I get the machine I will post the actual details of the warranty.

DT do you know if the accidental dmg warranty is international? It says global for the 2years imagine it would be international, don't you think?

Thinking about it, I can buy a blue ray drive for it as an option at other online stores for 60-70 + shipping and tax, and probably land a bag for ~$50 and the BT can't be worth more than say $30-$50 right?

The money I save on the -a1 I could put into a SSD, so the only real thing id be losing out on is the accidental dmg, and honestly 500GB or 750 (assuming they're both sata2 drives with 16MB cache is kind of not needed for me with another 500GB external drive) and obviously the mouse.

    that's a tough choice...

thanks but I so wana order mine before then. I don't want them to get out of stock again...

Like I posted, I did have sucess in getting NCIX to price match lucomputer's cashprice of 1465 for A1 and I'd pay with CC. (but both dont have the A1 in stock anymore. If they wont pm for you, let me know. I can give you my pm confimation code for leverage, even though it expired after 2 days I get it)

Personally, I think you should get the QHDA1. It is priced lower than an A1, the only difference is you get bluray for 2gb less ram. (bluray is more expensive than 2gb of ram and the machine is cheaper!!)
1 annoying thing is that you get the canadian keyboard, but I ordered a US version keyboard for 30 bucks from ebay.

1465 for the A1 is a little better cause I just ran the ncix price A1 through the checkout and the final price with taxes/shipping/express RMA coverage was $397 more than my final XR1 cost!

But yeah they will only PM if the competitor has it in stock.

Ok thanks heaps DT, so you think I can get a cash price for the QHDA1 from LU even if I pay with Pay Pal. an extra 20 off would be nice...

    Just ask I guess.

I'll have to call them tomorrow as I need to sort out the shipping details being different from my Pay Pal account, so I'll talk to them then.

Will update tomorrow and let you know how I went.

ask lucomp if you can paypal echeck to get cash price. I am not sure if Lu will do it. They are very short answered over the phone but you can try.

I am paying the normal price and purchasing with CC

FWIW When I got my price match from NCIX, lucomputers did not have A1 in stock.

Actually, If you live in BC and is in driving distance from Richmond, BC; I think you would be better off buying from PCCANADA rather than LUcomputers.
You can save on the shipping at least (even if you are not, they have free shipping for orders over 50 bucks)
I talked to Frank from PCCANADA and he would price match LUcomputer's normal price for QHDA1 (I know I am so crazy with all these price matching but I wanted the best possible deal and the fastest way to get it after I realized I cant wait for uncertain periods for LU to have the qhdB1 in stock)

The average asus computer comes with 2 year Global and 1 year North American accidental

PC canada is out of the question for me, they wont accept PayPal, and till I have my Canadian account setup + whatever other time it takes to get a visa/cards and xfer money into it, I'm better off jsut going with Lu...

I'm Golden too, so pretty much in the Rockies its a good days drive to Richmond for me, and would be more in petrol anyway.

I'm going to go with Lu QHDA1, just having trouble sorting out Pay Pal.

I need to make sure its going to take the money from the CC rather than debit. and the help method information inside paypal won't work for me, coming up with a page error... =(

So I'll sort this out, and be done with it, I'm not that poor that I need to squabble over a few dollars, and by jeebas I just want a gaming laptop, its been too long! I think with the expedited shipping the difference would only be a day maybe two (fingers x) anyway.

I'm excited its all coming together, just one little hurdle left and I'm gtg. =)

Well didn't I get a royal spanking today, my order is in, but its ended up costing me another 70 odd dollars to boot + 4-5 hours out of my day where I should have been helping with a friends garden ~_^

When I was trying to make the payment this morning it turned out I couldn't do an int X-fer because my bank changed its security measures, and I now require a dongle (which they're sending to me) to do stuff like that...

2 The guy from Lucomputers, although he was nice enough, wasn't doing me any favors. Personally for me as a foreigner buying off them was easily the MOST painful experience I've ever ahd to deal with, I felt like crying at one stage... I wouldn't recommended it to anyone else.

    They wanted:
    Proof I lived in canada
    proof I worked here
    copy of my visa card
ID to go along with it
and only after numerous phone calls literally hours spent on the phone between my bank in Oz, Pay pal, and Lucomputers did I finally get to place my order but now I have to wait 3-5 days for the e-(ghey)cheque to clear, so I although it was possible to get the laptop shipped today, I now wont be receiving (or even having it shipped) til probablyl the end of next week if not later...

QQ all round, but I guess at least (fingers x) i'll be getting my swanky new machine before xmas...

Going to have to go to the pub tonight, get away from all this computer business lols

Wow, that's awful. Definitely a company I would stay away from. I've never seen a laptop company other than this one demand all this personal information. I would of just told him off and moved on to another company - not worth the time. Should of gone with a reseller here on the forums imo.

Oh grats. I'm soo jealous. Personally I wouldn't be so annoyed if at least I didn't have to wait 3-5 days for the payment to clear. I understand its not entirely Lucompputers fault. Just would be nice if int xfers were not such a big deal.

I mean with all the preaching that goes around that Visa is all over the world/so widely used, and Paypal is soooo easy to purchase stuff online, I guess in the real world the fact is, its not...

Also the worst part about it is, that I did have fraudulent activity on my visa twice in the last 2 months, although I didn't even notice the first time. it wasn't even $10 all up, and it almost cost me as much to sort out a new visa then it did for what happened. But still people can use my card for online purchases and I can't even use it for it!!!

I also talked to my bank and Paypal on the phone today they both were so, yeh int xfers shouldn't be a problem. But when they actually looked at it, "its not a problem" but they have this statistical something 'o rather that judges for fraudulent transaction, and just because I come from another country I automatically fall into that basket. aka profiling...

Like when I came across the border from the US. straight away the border control was profiling my friend and I. Its just that we're assumed guilty till proven innocent... =(

Well enough qq's tho, thanks for all the help. my payment is ment to clear on the 9th, fingers x its before then, but after that I guess it will take a day or two to get to me. which means I should have it by next friday-ish...

but again fingers are still x for that!
    =)

I bought mine through XoticPC, came to about 1884$ CDN after expedited shipping. You can get the 3% discount from XoticPC (and GenTech) if you do a bank wire transfer, which I did through RBC, although still waiting for confirmation. :p I added an additional year warranty so its 3 years, a second HDD (500GB), and 8GB RAM, and a 6200 Intel Wireless card, the IC7 thermal compound and a spare power adapter.

I bought my G73JH with NCIX this summer. The good thing with NCIX is that they don,t charge the provincial sales tax, only the federal 5% one. That saved me almost 125$

Hey just thought I'd update about the G53JW-XR1 I ordered from ncix.

First, it's awesome. Second, yes the warranty is only 1 year instead of 2 years but it still DOES include the 1 year of accidental coverage.

Best $1200 i've spent. BTW will probably post some more details/impressions later in one of the g53 threads.

Thanks for the info, this thread was so useful to me, I was unaware that the XR1 model had no backpack or mouse, as well as the lower warranty.
but since I already have a good backpack, and a wireless mouse, as well as a few extra hard drives kicking around, I think the XR1 is the way to go.
Ram could be upgraded at a later date.

Too bad the $1219 price is over for the XR1, I found one for $1275 at Bestdirect at the moment, with free shipping.
seems to be like $100 savings in the end(from Alberta, only GST)

    Normal Price: $1350 + $20 shipping +5% tax(on both shipping and product) = $1438.5
    Sale Price: $1275 + FREE shipping +5% tax = $1338(almost $1337 haha)

Keep posting more Canadian Deals and thoughts! very useful.

Oh if anyone knows a good place to order the Hard Drive Bracket, please post here, I only found a place in the UK with approx. $40+ total(after tax and shipping)

Edit: forgot about the $5 environmental fee, checkout total becomes $1344.79 if anyone cares.

hideinthesky - Asusparts is the only place I'm aware of that has the caddy. You could cut the first one in half, and use half on each drive. IT MIGHT work.

Good to know, not sure if i want to screw around with an expensive laptop though.. sure only the hard drive would be effected, but then again having to buy 2 caddy's rather than 1 would suck.

I live in Calgary, Alberta(where that company started)

That is the first place that I tried, they never started carrying it until this week, they are out of stock still fyi, not sure if they even got any so far.

and they told me that they would not carry the -XR1 model...

anyway got my XR1 for $1275 and free shipping, took 3 days to ship, I'm happy with the service form bestdirect.

if they get it in stock that might be the best place to go!

Edit: you talking about the Hard drive caddy?
could you link the product on their site?

the reason I even said "they told me..." was because I noticed that they carry it now, I would have gone through them for sure if I knew...

Although if you read the rest of my post I mention how they charge $75 more for it than what I paid.

So I am already happy, because I also got it more than a week before memory express even had it on their site.
