Hey guys, I have the G73 (obviously) and have tried to hook it up to my Samsung 1080P DLP and run it at 1920X1080 via VGA, but the max it the G73 will put out is 1600X1200. Do I need to use HDMI in order for it to run the correct resolution or is 1600X1200 the max that an additional display can have? Also can I hook up 2 additional displays via the HDMI and the VGA? Or will it only allow one at a time?

    Thanks in advance!

You can use VGA for 1600*1200, that resolution isn't very high at all.

I understand that, the issue is that it will only allow up to 1600X1200 on my TV that allows 1920X1080, so is it a limitation of the 5870M?

Thats odd....hmmm, whether I use CCC or Windows Display Properties I can only go as high as 1600X1200.....odd. I'll have to dig deeper.

Any idea if I can hook a display into the VGA and another into the HDMI for 3 displays total?

Ok so awesome question, I have a sharp 1920X1080p lcd hdtv, great tv does 1080p on the hdmi, but for my dvi port there is a certain max resolution it will display for pcs, I forget what it is now i think it was something like 800X600 which is rediculous, but its the tv not the pc. Your situation sounds similar to mine so id suggest looking in your user manual and seeing what the max resolution for that input on your tv it. And you should go out and by an HDMI anyways, they are dirt cheap on the net....

The G73 HDMI port outputs full 7.1 Audio and 1080p Video.

I am not sure why yours doesn't. Many TVs I know are rated for 1080p but in reality they don't have a 1080p input, it's a way to deceive customers to buy TVs that are really 720p only into thinking they have 1080p.

Plug it in and check the panel properties in CCC.

That is definitely a driver thing. I have only plugged into the TV once just to see if it worked. Don't you have to go into CCC and hit "Detect Display"? Then it should automatically offer the TV as an output with the correct resolutions to choose from. I saw in there that you can set CCC to automatically detect displays, but the default was set to manual.

Correct, I plug it in and head to CCC where I detect displays. It comes up fine and dandy but only allows me to go up to 1600X1200 and not 1920X1080, however if I use my desktop via the same VGA cord and plug it goes up to 1920X1080 without an issue.

Why are you using VGA when the HDMI outputs both HD Audio and HD Video?

I too should clarify that the one time I tested this, I used an HDMI cable. My DLP TV is 720P native and it worked fine on 720p and 1080i. Although 1080i was tiny fonts on my 62 inch TV set. :eek2:

Because I use my HT for my sound, I just figured VGA would give the same quality picture as HDMI. That being said, I've tried both and both do the same....both give me a max res on my TV of 1600X1200, which is whack because my TV can't do 1200 tall.

Why don't you use your HDMI to feed into your Home Theatre and then feed the video from your Home Theatre to your TV. That's how Home Theatre setups work as far as I know.

Its only driver issue. Try to uninstall TV driver and create own driver (.inf file) with that resolution. It will let you use any resolution and frequency what you need. Just be sure that your TV support it.

Also you should be able to support up to 3 displays as you were asking earlier. While Ati's eyeifinity can support up to 6 for certain cards (I believe) the g73 is obviously limited to 3 due to our limited number of connections

Nope, no eyefinity for G73. HD5870M is Eyefinity capable. But it's not enabled on the G73. You would need a VGA, HDMI, and a displayport for that.

Far as I know only the 17" HP Envy has Eyefinity. Do not believe MSI or Alienware or Clevo. Might be wrong, but I've only seen it on a HP so far.

Eyfinity does take a lot of power so might as well disable it on a mobile PC.

and here i was prepared to defend you based on the thought that you had an older A/V receiver with no hdmi input.

for the record mine works just fine 1920 x 1080 through my yamaha receiver. Also be sure to get bitstreaming working so you can take advantage of multi-channel sound for movies etc.

The digital signal of DVI or HDMI is far superior to analog VGA. The difference is even more noticable if you're used toa high quality digital signal and have to temporarily swtich back to VGA for any reason.

Also, you can right click on the sound icon in the taskbar, select "playback devices" and switch the default sound output between realtek and HDMI output. This would allow you to keep your sound through your HT while getting your video to the TV through HDMI.

If you wanna keep using VGA though. . I can't stop ya ;)

I tracked down my HDMI cable and plugged the G73 into a Toshiba 32" 720P in my son's room last night. It works like a peach. It was also at 1920X1080 resolution. The fonts were very tiny and he was trying to play WoW so I reset the resolution to 1200 X 720 and it was perfect. (It wasn't really at 1920X1080 to begin with, but it squeezes everything up and makes that size image fit the TV screen)

One issue that I ran into was that there was no sound coming from the TV. Sound was coming from the laptop. When you right click the windows speaker icon in the system tray, you can choose "Playback devices". There should be three listed. Everyone here knows, I'm sure, that you set ATI HDMI Audio as the default playback device to get this to work. However, mine said "not plugged in" and everything was grayed out. To get it working, I installed Realtek ATI HDMI Audio 2.49 from the realtek site. That fixed it up where I could set the default audio to ATI HDMI Audio and it starting playing over the TV set.
