    Hello guys,

when I look notebookcheck, I see that the best one is G73SW about noise level. How do you think about that? How is the difference between these laptops both at idle and load modes? Is it worth to buy g73sw since price differences with g74 is too low in my country. just 50 dollar difference with g73sw with full options and g74sx 3D

    Regards

G74SX is very quiet... the fans blow out to a common larger port, so it acts like a muffler

But people complain about continuous fan noise while computer is idle?? I tested g74 at my office today, and didn't hear anything. However, there were some other noises as well from street, etc. I am just afraid that in my quiet room, it will play with my nerves...

Comparing the heat produced against the power available the noise of the G73 series is something very special. I have not seen any other laptop that runs as quietly as these can and if you compare to the fans that run on a desktop there is no contest, I hardly even notice the fans at all in my JH which with my XM is bound to run hotter than an SW.

My fans rarely go anywhere near 3500RPM+ even when gaming with the loads up high and GPU temps in to the mid 70's. If the G74 runs around 60-70oC max on the GPU from the results being posted I would expect it to be the same or even quieter considering there will be no need for the fans to run flat out.

It is the way things progress and we do not realise what we actually have in this day and age. Go play on a PS1 and compare it to an Xbox 360, it is the same case comparing an Acer Aspire One with its obscene fan noise against the latest G series. You will never achieve perfection because something new will come round the corner and beat it.

Unless you're getting a way, way cheaper deal on the G73, get the G74. 15% faster GPU, full, easy access to all 4 DIMM slots.

I can't compare it to the G73's noise, but the G74 is very, very impressive from a noise standpoint (and every other way for that matter).

You can hear it in a quiet room, but it's no louder than my N80 at idle. I mean it's just normal quite notebook sounds, that even for me (I'm annoyed by extra sounds) isn't annoying.

What's really impressive is how quiet it is under load...running the CPU and GPU at 100%, even in a quiet room it doesn't get too much louder. It's either the quietest notebook I've ever heard, or close to it (Dell's M15x had a similarly impressive cooling system, although I THINK this one is even quieter, if anything).

It cools well, and it's quiet doing it, and it's good performance-I really couldn't ask for more, and I seriously doubt the G73 is much different one way or the other (supposedly the G74 is improved a bit in that regard)?

For comparison sake, it's not 100% dead silent like the Macbook Air is when it's not doing anything, but it's a LOT quieter than the Air is when you're actually doing stuff on it, if that makes sense.

as a point of reference, I played games in a hotel room with a co-worker who brought his M17xR3 w/ a 460m (and 3d screen, not that it matters).

You couldn't hear the G73 at all, but the M17x was probably drowning it out, cause it was kinda loud ><

According to notebookcheck, g74 is a bit noisy when it is idle. Everything is better for g73sw as it is seen. But as you said, g74 is not that worse than g73sw. And actually I don't have any idea how much loud 32 db is or 35 db. Any website to hear db degrees ? Like continuous sound coming from computer as 32 db, and then I can change it to 35 db to hear...

dB is not a measurement of sound, but a measurement of sound gain/loss (as it references an existing sound level...). Now, dBM is a unit of measurement and would be an accurate way to describe sound.

Example: my computer room may have an ambient sound of 53 dbm, but my desktop is 3 dB louder than that. (every 3 dB is doubling the sound of the base level). Anything reported in dB should be taken with a grain of salt due to it not being an actual measurement level, but a measurement of gain (difference) from another level of sound (unless they report the base dBm level as a reference).

Another example: 60 dB with a baseline of a mouse sqeek would really only be a little compared to 60 dBs with a baseline of a car horn. :)

Just wanted to put in my opinion of the G73JH. With Battlefield 3 ans SWTOR I never hear anything. only when its dead quiet and I'm just surfing the internet I hear a little fan noise. I'm a soft typer and even the typing is louder then the fan. Quiet as can be.

I have the same experience with my A1, the fans are seemingly quieter than what I've heard from the G74 but that's just my opinion. Nothing compared to the M11x :p

AFAIK, the G73SW is more silent.

Still, the G74 is quieter than my Macbook Air or N80, and a bajillion times more powerful than both, AND cools way better :) It's very competent.

I remember a post from xotic mentioning the G73s were quieter at idle, but that the G74 made a tad less noise when the fans were at full.
