Hey everyone! I'm having an issue running Maya 2008 in Windows 7 64, it seems it just crashes when I try and open the program and I'm not sure what to do. I've tried compatibility modes as well as both the 32 and 64 Bit versions of Maya without any success. I run Max 2011 without any issues at all so I'm not sure what's going on with Maya 2008. Let me know if you need any more information.
I've also added an attachment showing the error that keeps popping up.

"The google" reveals that it's a problem due to maya being stupid... advice ranges from 'reinstall in vista or xp compatibility modes' to 'update directx, drivers, useless blah blah ect'. Did you try reinstalling it in compatibility? It's a bit different than just running it in compatibility, and I have no idea why.
Nice car. -
I haven't actually, I'm trying it right now
and thanks for the car comment, I like it....never be able to afford one, but that's the idea haha!
-
Failed again....damn it
-
Currently downloading Maya 2011 to see if it does the same thing or if it will run fine like Max 2011 does. Thank goodness for free student copies from Autodesk
-
Hrm, is maya as updated as possible? Did you try turning off UAC and/or firewall/AV?
Also heard somewhere that office 07 had some conflicting portion with maya that made very little sense... I think it was Groove? Do you have office 07?
And then there was another thing about the vector renderer disliking newer hardware, try disabling it autoloading on startup
-
Hmmm, I'll have to give that a go....and no Office 2007 here just 2010
and I thought I was good with google lol -
What a hunk of crap, it won't run Maya 2011 either...and I tried removing those Vector Renderer files as stated, why can't software companies keep up with hardware? Freaking lame...how the hell am I supposed to get work done.

I had my hopes up but I'm still getting the same pesky error
so no go with that Windows Update
-
Hmm. I have maya 2008, 2010, and 2011 working great on my G73. I also have max 2010 installed as well with no problems. I actually spend about 4 hours inside maya 2010 a few nights ago with the laptop and it worked fine.

Do you have any third party plug-ins that are installed with it? Usually on launch failure you'll see an error warning but that screen you're showing is signaling an actual crash trying to load something (which is why it's trying to write a temp file).
Post back here or drop me a PM - I work at Autodesk on the Maya team so I can probably help you debug this -
Hey boosted
glad to have you aboard! I don't have any 3rd party plugins that I know of, just downloaded and installed right from Autodesk's site.
-
Are all your drivers and everything up to date? Latest DirectX SDK and stuff? I'm assuming it's not licensing related as the app gets to the loading screen.
What ATI drivers are you running? -
Does it actually dump the crash log to the temp folder? If it does that might reveal something...
-
It says it's unable to save, however I just did a complete format and fresh install. I'm installing drivers now and will install Maya next. I'll post back soon if this fixed it. With everyone else running it just fine it has to be an issue with the install me thinks
-
Good news, it must have been a flakey install of Windows. I installed Maya and it fired right up
Boosted, before I was using drivers 10.1 but now I am attempting to use 10.8, I will see how they go or if I will be cursed with the dreaded GSOD
Thanks again for the help, it's priceless to know people who work in the areas that you do! -
If you have any troubles just fire me a PM and I'd be happy to help out. I've had bad luck with my G73 and am waiting for an escalation person to contact me about resolving my issue so I haven't even had the chance to try Maya on the 10.8 drivers as the machine won't stay up long enough.
-
Well I actually had to revert to 10.6 as 10.8 was making my GPU idle at 77*C and now on 10.6 I sit back where I was in the mid 50's
-
So, overnight render of maya. 10.8's work great no crashes! (not that the gpu is even doing anything during mental ray but either way, still no crashing or GDOD's)
-
10.8 worked alright for you? I tried them twice and both times it resulted in very high temps and when I tried to enter CCC it said it couldn't find a supported GPU
