For those who haven't started playing Metro 2033, this game is actually not bad at all in terms of fps or playability. It's no different than any other game. Just like TW2, where most are able to play it Ultra-ish at 1080p, minus ubersampling, AA, Bloom, SSAO; ..Metro 2033 is no different. You could easily play it at 1080p and DirectX 11, just have to disable Advance DOF. You could enable tesellation on DirectX 11 option which will deduct 5 fps, but at 1080p you can't really tell the difference. And even when tessellation on, it's still okay fps-wise. Between normal, high and very high setting the physics of characters doesn't change, just enable advance physics in the game menu option. Here's some screenshots with fps. Also, the game is thrilling! Lastly, the game is not too dark, where they say it could be overbearing at times, it's just not true. The visual and lighting are very good.

Metro 2033 is a great game and I get amazing results on the JH one of the major problems when using Directx 11 is the Advance DOF it kills FPS turn that off and leave Tessellation on and you can run it on high at 1080p with a good 30-40fps. Or at least you can with the ATI very high seems to destroy frames and the only difference really noticable is the blur which is annoying.
