I have recently purchased a g73jh from BB. I was doing a clean install of windows 7, which I have done plenty of times, when I realized the laptop came with no Driver and Utility disk. I have spent the last day trying to get all of the essential drivers, but I am not sure if I have them all. I used driverview to gather a list of non-microsoft drivers. Could someone help me out and check the list to see if there are any missing?

Also, how often does the VSOD issue occur. I had it happen to me twice with the newest ati driver while playing SC2. I rolled it back to 9.12 and it has been pretty good so far, but I read somewhere that the VSOD, unlike the GSOD, is a hardware issue. Is there any truth to that?
-
-
If the unit was made before May, have BB replace the unit with a newer one, or have them replace / repaste your GPU.
-
I think is was made recently. Where do I check the build date?
-
Pull out the battery and check the label there.
-
I'll check in around 7:30p est. when I get home with the date my machine was made. If it is before May should I be more concerned about the GPU?
-
Yes. <('.')>
-
I looked behind the battery and I didn't see it. The only place I saw a date was on the asus warrant sticker on the bottom and it says 2010 - 06
-
k, June 2010, so you shouldn't have any hardware issues with latest Catalyst drivers. Just download the latest and install.
-
From ati website? That is what I did when it started.
-
So do an uninstall and then a full install.
-
That is what I did last time and it VSOD. This time I installed it over 9.12 and it works so far. Are there any other drivers I am missing on this computer?
-
not if it's working, no
-
Okay...i just vsod while playing SC2.. I am going to rollback to 9.12. Should I worry?
-
I decided to return it to BB. Its not worth risking 1200 bux on it possibly being a hardware issue. When I get my new one i'll update to catalyst 10.7 and run some benchmarks to make sure I dont have this issue again. Thanks for your help.
-
I dont want to alarm you, but you will probably have the same GSOD issues on any new one you receive, since its probably the issue of Asus using different vRAM/PCB in manufacturing the GPU, which is simply incompatible with the new clocks settings in the newer ATI drivers and Asus is too lazy to ask them to make custom drivers for the g73jh.
-
So in other words newer catalyst drivers will never work on g73jh and I have to stick with stock drivers? My GSOD was with the vertical line, which seems to be a little bit different issue. I'll try a new one anyways.
-
-
I just went ahead and exchanged it for a July model. I'll see how it works later.
-
Ooooo you lucky sucker!
-
-
he mentioned it in the big Owner's Lounge thread
-
?
-
The new comp is working great so far. I am very hesitant to update to 10.7 though..
-
He mentions that the units since made in May or later have been showing alot less issues, including GSODs, and been shipping with 209 BIOS.
You can always search all of his posts using his nick. -
Ill look into it more, but as i hear the only change is the newer batches are shipping with the 209 bios, which could be why they have less problems - this bios fixed a few issues like fn+esc freeze and hybernation problems. But i still havent heard of a single report of true stability on 10.6/10.7 drivers on a G73JH with a furmark test attached. The Asus tech im in contact with says the hardware seams to be the same.
-
Confirmed by users, the new June batches are just as bad, getting GSODs in furmark within minutes, so my tech was probably right about the hardware being the same and the only change being the 209 bios.
-
I still refuse to update stock drivers and have had no issues with the july model so far. I am going to wait for confirmation that this issue is fixed before updating to new drivers.
-
GSOD has nothing to do with the batch, they are all the same GPU, GSOD has to do with the ATI drivers.
I was saying new shipments comes with BIOS 209 already so people won't have to take the risk that KB backlight not working after BIOS update from 206 to 209:

Its oversimplified to say the GSOD has to do with the drivers. Every other laptop with the Mobility 5870 has no problems. Its actually the hardware - Asus GPU that cant take the changes in newer drivers and is crashing becouse of it, so its not fair to blame it on the drivers - or ATI. In the end it does mean you only get GSODs on newer drivers, but its not the drivers fault.....
Im trying to convince ATI to release modified versions of 10.6 or 10.7 drivers with the clocks reverted to those of the old drivers (or whatever settings are causing issues in the new drivers), but it might be impossible without Asus actually reporting the problem becouse theyre refusing to do it without that. But they would be happy to help if Asus only said something. -
If we only knew what we needed to rip from 10.1 to import into the other driver packages. .inf maybe?
