Hello, I just replaced my HDD with the Momentus XT 500and just recently I started experiencing weird stuttering, hiccups, and random freezes. As I am typing this right now, I am experiencing random pauses for 1-2 seconds which is extremely annoying. This is typically noticeable in games, especially WoW. I haven't had this issue before, and just today have I started experiencing this. I updated to the latest firmware (SD24) and am still experiencing the problem. I've been reading up on others disabling APM using CrystalDiskInfo, which I have also done and continue to experience the issue. Is my Momentus XT a lemon?

    Might be, yes.
I had the same issues with it when I got the laptop, but after updating to SD24 they all went away and I dont even need to use CrystalDiskInfo anymore.

Is the XT not that reliable? I read a lot of problems with this hd. Do you recommend it? I plan to get one in the future.

From my point of view it is very reliable and I would recommend it as OS drive, if you cannot afford an SSD. As a data drive it most likely wont take advantage of the 4GB cache zone and perform as a regular 7.2k rpm hd.

Will you notice the difference with that to a normal 7200rpm drive? Does it boot faster? How would you compare it with a ssd?

It's slower than an ssd but I never had one to really compare. It is faster than a regular 7.2k rpm drive after a few bootups as the drive needs to create a cache of the most used system files that will be loaded.

My XT used to do some strange things, as I use it for Hyper-V; uninstalling the Intel Rapid Storage drivers cleared it up instantly. See if this helps your situation.

I'm really sorry to hear about your luck with the drive.

I replaced both of my HDD's in my G73 with these models. They seem to run great, no hitching/stuttering/freezes. I haven't defragmented the drive since I put them in and they run exceptionally well.

I do recall hearing something like this (not sure from where) but it was fixed (again, this is based on bits and pieces in my mind) with a firmware update.

I know there's a newer firmware version and it's the one stamped on the outside of my drive. So maybe yours has the old one? Check around for Momentus XT firmware updates and maybe it'll come up.

Additionally, I did not have to alter or change any settings in Windows, or with any third party application to make these drives run great. Just popped them in.

    Good luck!

    So, an update:

I did a format and a fresh install on it, twice, and it's still acting up!!! I will just return this drive. My 5400RPM works more efficiently than this. Ugh, so frustrating.

First off, what notebook model do you have.

Secondly, are you using AHCI mode in the BIOS?

Apparently you decided not to update the HDD firmware, despite being told it will address your issues...

G73JH-RBBX05, and I am using AHCI mode in the BIOS.

As stated in the initial post, I have updated to the latest firmware SD24, unless there is another firmware out there that I do not know about. It still has not addressed my issue.
