I'm very sure its a driver problem. I open origin, then click BF3, then find a server and then the pop up window will say launching BF3, then nothing happens.

It seems my G73JH is very picky about drivers. I can only install the outdated ones from the ASUS website that are specifically for G73JH. I've tried installing multiple drivers from AMD website for the notebook HD 5870 card but it always gives me a BSOD after installing. After the BSOD I have to uninstall, then go back to the following specific driver for my graphics card to work again.
ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download G73Jh
(click VGA and that's the driver. Version V8.683.0.0, 2010.01.29 update)

If you guys could help out a fellow G73JH owner it'd be greatly appreciated. Been playing SC2 no problems this past while and try to play some BF3 and discover my drivers are messed!

Edit: I tried the driver on the following thread and it STILL results in a BSOD for me http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...performance-driver-v-11-10-a.html#post7977420 .

Did you also do a BIOS update?

Pardon my lack of knowledge but I didn't notice the difference . If that thread is a how-to on a VBIOS only, then I don't believe I've done a BIOS update.

I've noticed this thread and it appears I have very similar problem except I never sent mine into ASUS, and I'm not getting an overheating problem. I just have a BSOD whenever I update to the latest video driver problem.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...2-g73jh-bsod-when-updating-video-drivers.html

I took note of the following reply:
Should I run the crap cleaner then install the following (11.9)?

    ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

Or would that result in a BSOD? If yes then will a BIOS update allow me to update drivers without getting BSODs?

Thanks for all the help so far, looking forward to a solution!

That's not really helpful 9800xpv... The G73JH can run BF3 without issues at all, and many have done so successfully. You need to install very recent ATI drivers to provide adequate performance though because the recent driver update 11.10 driver (still in testing) is a modified driver that improves performance in BF3 and RAGE.

You'll need to have updated your vBIOS to run the most recent ATI drivers, but if you've done that already you might want to uninstall your current ATI drivers from Programs and then run driversweeper to clear out any old remnants of the ATI drivers.

Once that's done, reboot and load the most updated ATI drivers at:
AMD Catalyst? 11.10 Preview Driver Version 2

That's the latest ATI driver available and provides performance fixes for BF3 and RAGE.

Hope this helps. I'm running it without issue, but I did the vBIOS update which is required to run the recent ATI drivers.

You shouldn't do any of these things until you do a BIOS update. Read the sticky that I linked you to, it's all there :) The reason you're BSODing is because you have the latest vBIOS but an ancient BIOS.

The latest driver installed correctly though. Updating the BIOS seems so sketch :( . I have noticed my computer locks up on start up since the latest driver. It's as if it's doing an intense virus scan, or something that takes a lot of CPU. After about 2-5 minutes it stops and runs fast as usual. Could this be another reason to update the BIOS?

    1) Please make sure your G73JH is on BIOS 213

    2) Your vBIOS should be up to 012.020.000.032.038352, you can use GPU-Z or HWINFO64 to check this. If not, G73Jh GSOD Vbios Update It has a video for a How-To guide

    3) Once you have verified the above two, you can then run current AMD Catalysts. If you need to uninstall, you can d/l this :

    http://pcaudio.ath.cx/stuff/ATI Crap Cleaner.zip

Run the AMD uninstaller, reboot, and then run the crap cleaner. Follow up with installing your desired driver pack.

    Sorry to bump this but...

The person who wrote the above quote is completely right. I ignored him seeing as how my computer was working but my computer ended up crapping out and pretty much pooched it about a week ago. I had to reformat. Couldn't log in or anything.

I thought I had fixed it but I was just playing the BF3 campaign just now and my computer shut off. I'm pretty sure the issue was that it got too hot. But I was only set to High Performance, not Power 4Gear or anything. I'm stumped, I updated the vbios on this video about a year ago because of crashes due to overheating from SC2. I'm assuming I had to reformat because of the previous quote "have the latest vBIOS but an ancient BIOS". But after the reformat I made sure to do a clean uninstall of GPU drivers, then put the latest AMD drivers on and update to the latest BIOS.

Why did BF3 crash my comp? It's possible it was genuinely too hot... Or when I reformat do I have to redo the vbios?

    How old is your laptop?
If is that hot, you should carefully check your temps. If those are high, try to clean the laptop from dust. You can use an air crompressor, remove the service panel and shoot directly in the back vents. If dust is clogging your laptop, then probably thats the reason of the excessive heat.
Even if your lappy is 1 year old i doubt you need a repast, unless its a manufacturing problem, which can happen.

I bought mine in the summer of 2010. About a year and a bit? I'm sorry I couldn't tell you guys what my temps were -- I didn't have that program. HOWEVER I'm not quite sure this is a temp issue anymore. I tried playing the game again after letting my computer sit for quite awhile, I cracked a window open that's right by my computer (it's freaking cold where I live). PLUS, I got two ice packs from the freezer and placed them under my laptop. I felt my computer and it was nice and cold. While playing BF3 (maybe for a little bit longer this time though) my computer completely shut down yet again.

I've used an air compressor in the past before ultimately finding out I had to update the vbios way back about half a year ago. This really looks (to me) like the same issue. It seems as though when I reset to factory defaults, it set me back to the factory vbios which has the issue of thinking it's overheating when it's not, thus shutting the computer down.

If I F9 reformat to factory defaults -- which is what I did -- does this reformat the vbios? If yes this makes sense because after the reformat I only updated video drivers then bios.

SwannyMatt, can you explain to me what your crash looks like with BF3? I've tried a few different drivers and BF3 only seems to be able to use either the most recent or the BF3 beta driver. Oddly enough only these two drivers causes me to crash in the middle of any game, most neteably, BF3. It's in the appearance of verticle stripes taking the color of the most predominant color on the screen at the time of the crash, followed by an audio loop. Is this what you're experiencing?

I have 11.9. If there are any vertical lines I haven't noticed them because it happens that quickly. There isn't any looping sound. I'll be playing then black screen and silence except for the fading noises of my computer dying down. I can't start it back up until after it cools down or if I unplug it and hold the power button for a minute.

I unscrewed the main cover and blew out as much dust from every nook and cranny I could see, and out the back vents. I'll admit quite a bit of dust was removed, but nothing that shocked me. I played BF3 after for what seemed to be much longer than before but I'm not convinced the issue is resolved.

I updated my vBIOS and it seems like it may have fixed my problem. (vBIOS, not BIOS). I played for 2 hours consecutive on Ultra settings without a crash with my Realtek onboard sounds enabled.

i did this using Catalyst 11.10 official release (i tried official release before updating vBIOS and it still crashed)
