Hello everyone, I have a problem with my laptop G73JH, I hope you can help me out with it.

Whenever I try to play a CD or DVD on the computer the reader won't read it at all, it makes a small noise and then nothing happens.
When I try to burn a CD or DVD the burning program ( nero, windows media player...) asks me to insert a blank disc, but of course I already put a blank CD in.

It's funny because I have installed games using the reader and I have burnt CDs and DVDs before. By the way the Bluray reader is a LG CT21N.

Any ideas will be welcome, thank you.

    Sounds like the lens died.

I had an issue once where the laser housing snagged on a piece of the aluminum guard under the drive, which caused a similar issue. Couldn't hurt to check it.

do you think I should RMA it? If the lens broke I dont know if the warranty would cover it.

I would think an RMA would cover it no problem. On a side note, have you tried a BluRay disk in it yet? I have a Pioneer BluRay drive for a desktop that also stopped reading cd's and dvd's but it reads blurays just fine. Not much use since you would need all 3 formats when using the laptop but still. Would tell us if the drive itself is working at all or not.

It doesn't read BR either, it may be the lens after all, I can open the tray just fine but it's like there's no disc at all inside. It makes a small noise an thats all. I guess it is time to RMA it, thanks guys.

The lens itself didn't die (Since the BR lens is completely separate from the CD/DVD one.) Either way RMA time for you.

Be polite and ask if you can cross-ship just the optical drive so you don't have to send the entire machine in...it's 2 screws to remove the access panel and one screw to remove the drive :)

Very good suggestion. No reason at all to send the entire laptop just to replace the bd-rom

    Cheers,

If you ship your BD-ROM only, make sure you keep the small angle bracket that is screwed to the back of the optical drive. That may not come on the replacement drive. You'll need it to secure the drive in the bay again.
