I RMAed my laptop and got the motherboard replaced because my hard drive controller failed. I had to reload because it screwed up my hard drives pretty badly... lots of bad files. I got it back and all is well up until yesterday.
I turned it on to do a little internet surging but I didn't have my mouse handy so I used the touchpad which I do rarely. It was worse than ever after RMA. The pad was pretty much unusable. Then I track down my trusty mouse and go to play some Skyrim and there's a freakin' GNAT behind my screen. It's dead because it's not moving but it's there. You can see the fat little body and the little wings and everything. It was annoying the crap out of me.
I disassembled the whole laptop. First I disassembled the chassis and took the foil off the backside of the TP. Now it is working flawlessly. Then I took apart the lid and fished around for the gnat. I couldn't find it. I think it's behind that white film on the back of the LCD and I decided lifting that white film and fishing around in there with a q-tip would be stupid so I put it back together. When I booted it back up it had shifted to a different part of the screen. This made me realize it was loose in there and not stuck to something. I patted the backside of the lid with my hand and the little sucker fell out of sight. We'll call that a fix.
I hope removing that foil is a permanent fix for the touchpad because that was the one part of this laptop that has been all but useless since day one.
Word of caution... there were some screws that were fairly loose after my RMA. If you RMA and they have to open it up, check all the screws you can get to reasonably. They all probably need to be tweaked down a little.

My touchpad has been working perfectly for the past 3 weeks after i removed the silver foil. It was an embarrassment before but now, it works so well that my friend actually said it was better than his Vaio's touchpad!!

Yep, once the all the crap is gone from under the touchpad it's usually perfect. Mine has been 100% perfect for months.

I've had this laptop for almost two years now. I just started actually using the touchpad this weekend after removing the foil. With a driver that supports two finger scrolling, it's actually a wonderful pointing device!
