So anyway, I was typing up a paper in Word, then walked away for 10m and came back too find the entire left half of the screen with vertical lines of varying colors, and the right side all foggy white and blurred.

I was shocked that this happened outside of a 3D app and so random. The problem persisted even outside Windows at POST, so it's hardware related. I RMA'd it already, but what a pain to wait. I just bought the notebook for college and at a crucial time, this happens.

Anyway, was this a straight up video defect, or was there something I could have done to prevent it? I run everything at stock clock and play mostly Steam bought games. My card ran around 81C at peak according to GPU-Z, and I never repasted or anything.

You had hardware failure... As you can read from other post's... Just check everything when returned from RMA!

it looks like PSOD to me.. your GPU wouldn't die due to 81C temps...

What's that supposed to mean? Do they cheat us by taking other hardware?

I think by "check everything" the intention is: check that everything is in working order and you don't have any new problems. The VBIOS will probably be downgraded if you flashed it. They may swap out hardware too, so if you have anything you've upgraded, put the stock parts back in before RMA.

Yeah could be PSOD, reference this:

Actually I was just reading up on the PSOD. That's basically what I got. Anyway, I already sent it off for RMA to the Markham Canada location, which is supposedly the best service centre in the world for Asus.

Sounds like a PSOD to me.
    You need a new screen.
