Hi I just received my g51vx-a1 which has the 1920x1080p screen (model AUO B156HW01 v.5)and will be commenting on the screen only.
This is my criteria for a great quality display:
1) Bright
2) No graininess
3) Good viewing angles
4) Minimal bleed
5) Good color reproduction
6) Uniform illumination
The display on the g51vx-a1 meets most of the criteria but still doesn't satisfy my picky eyes. My hardware ID says it is an AUO, now I hear there is a compatible LG which is better (heard on the dell forums).
The g51 does meet the following criteria:
1) Bright
2) No graininess
5) Good color reproduction (little too blue out of the box though requires adjustment)
6) Uniform illumination
It however lacks in viewing angle, both vertical and horizontally. My biggest complaint however is the light bleed. Looking at the screen straight on, on a dark background there is this annoying greyish hue, what I can only describe as a bell shaped light bleed that extends from the middle of the screen to the bottom. The same kind of bleed you would see on any of those cheap bestbuy pc notebooks. This is disappointing and will be replacing the screen or selling the system when my cashback is available. I will post pictures of the bleed later.
So far the only notebook LCD that was, in my opinion perfect, was the CMO on my old fujitsu lifebook. It had great color, brightness, viewing angles, no light bleed and no graininess. The only problem with that notebook was the gpu was not very good.
I believe the dell xps 1640 uses the same screen and they also use LG screens so I might replace the screen with an LG one if the LG does not suffer from the horrible back light bleeding.
Here are 2 pics of the bleeding:

You'll have to note that since the G51 uses a weird 15.6" screen, it may be really hard to find proper screen replacements that are not from the G50 or G51 series.
-
I edited the OP to reflect that possibility. There may be a compatible LG screen since the dell xps 1640 also uses a 15.6" 1080p LED screen. They use both LG and AUO WLED lcds in the 1640 and I hear the LG looks better.
-
Which screen resolution are you talking about?
-
-
i'd like to comment that the leds from the backlit lid also bleeds through the panel and you can see it when you turn off the lcd(Fn+F7), that maybe what is making the bell shape(but you probably already knew that
)
-
well no i didnt see anything when i turned off the display. The bleed I'm talking about is coming from the bottom of the screen.
-
Ok with no ambient light yeah I see the outside LEDs bleeding through the screen, very odd. Anyone gonna post a picture of their screen with a dark background? Trying to compare screens.
-
Nothing is Real Notebook Evangelist
Every single laptop in the G50, G51, and G71 series has had the LED bleed thing.
-
OP, please post pics of viewing angles asap
-
Got to get those lights off then. This will drive me up the walls. Asus u reading this? kewl
and thanks in advance

Edit: Just checked; on a completely black background, I see no light bleed. It's so dark, in fact, that the screen itself may as well be off. And I also don't notice any bleed from the screen itself. -
I bought a new lcd monitor and the first one had a stuck pixel, aside from that I noticed white bleed at the bottom and top. Getting it exchanged the second one was even worse. After about 12 hours of use on both however the bleed went away somewhat. Wondering if g51 owners with bleed seen it reduce a bit over time.
-
i can confirm i have no bleed, though my eyes aren't bad and a black screen is usually just a black screen to me :/
i did notice when lookin at my screen directly from the edge that the bezel had "openings" along the edge which may cause some light to bleed through, but it looks like it may just be surface.
I'd post up a pic of the screen but a shot of a black screen = black screen >_< time for a better camera!
though my ideal of screen bleed may be different from others -
Noticed some possible bleed on this vid of a g51vx-rx05 model. Can see it in 1:03. Is this from the back lights or the lcd?
This was filmed by a video camera so I'm not sure if that's light bleed or because of the camera angle or lighting in the room but it does have that bell shape.

LCD/LED screen bleeding is often a subjective issue, especially for users whom have not owned many notebooks in the past. Even in stores where users can "test" different notebook models, it's quite difficult to judge the screen quality due to the bright ambient light conditions.
Here's a few things that I personally do to try and best explain the extent of bleeding/light leakage for a screen.
- Where it's originating from (usually this occurs from the bottom)
- How far the bleed extends towards the center of the screen (this is best observed with a black background)
- How intense/bright the leakage is
- How the bleeding changes when you adjust the vertical viewing angles.
There is really no set way to capture light bleeding with a typical consumer point-and-shoot camera, but if you do so, it's best to take the picture in a pitch dark room with a slight delayed exposure. If you under expose the image, the bleeding may not be visible and if you over expose, the bleeding may be over exaggerated. You'll have to play around with your camera settings to find the closest match.
Below is an image of a typical light bleeding screen. Notice the brighter white color along the bottom of the screen and a less obvious bleeding along the top.

I have the LG and the AUO 1080p 15.6" screen. The LG is amazing, the best screen I have ever owned. The AUO screen is very good but not quite in the same league.
If only it was easy to remove the screen from my SXPS (damn edge to edge cr*p) I would swap them over. -
Do either screen have strong blue hue overall out of the box?
-
-
Here are pics of the screen with startup logo and blank screen saver. This is not bleed from the side LEDs because it bleeds differently:
-
That picture looks like it is exaggerating the bleed quite a bit. is this close to what your eyes see or is this just the closest you could get?
Also I think the camera is capturing some of the off-black from the viewing angle. Try another picture further from the screen, and zoom the camera in on the screen. -
It may be exaggerating a little bit but that's pretty much what it looks like, some cheapo lcd you'd see on a bestbuy notebook. If there's no ambient light the bleed really causes everything to look washed out.
-
Wow......that is pretty bad. I think there is a tiny bit of bleed through on the RX05s but you have to look really hard to detect it. It is nowhere as bad as whats in your pictures
-
Yeah I'd expect the RX05 to look like this not the "real" version of the notebook.

Wow those pictures are horrible, I could not deal with that. Where does this leave potential buyers like myself?
-
If it was me I would push hard (but polite) for a brand new replacement unit. -
I'll have to check when I get home but my G51VX-A1 screen is awesome. I seem to remember it being very black. I suspect you have a defective unit. Also, that one shot your screen looks really blurry - your hands may have been shaking when you took the picture?
-
-
-
Only thing I noticed is when you look at the screen from other angles the image turns into a negative. Especially during a movie. Looking straight at it, it looks great.

right click my computer hit properties, click device manager, double click "monitors" then right click "Generic PnP Monitor", click properties, click details tab and find Hardware IDs from the list.
-
Very sad to see your pics Malignant I hope this issue is fixed for you. Seems other g51's have that problem (as in my video link a few posts back). I understand being LCD there will be SOME bleed but at what point is it considered defective and to be replaced? -
Anyways, I just got my G51VX-A1, and I have the same problem...although to a lesser degree. I'm at a bit of a loss for what to do. I love everything else about the laptop, but the screen irritates the hell outta me. Depending on the viewing angle, the screen goes from tolerable to terrible.
I got mine from xoticpc, so if I were to start the support chain, do I go to the reseller first or to ASUS? Anyone know? -
The closer the camera is to the screen, the more it is going to exaggerate the bleeding.
Take this picture of my screen, for example. On top was zoomed out and close to the screen, and bottom is further away from the screen, zoomed in. No other settings were changed.
The bottom much more closely resembles the actual bleed on my screen:
(note this is the g50vt X6 screen, just to show technique) -
Well either way the pictures I took do show the bleed pattern on mine and the camera did exaggerate a little but it is still almost spot on.
-
in that case, did you contact asus or your reseller yet? The sooner the better on these kinds of things.
-
I did post on the asus forums but I kinda doubt this is unusual. I'm guessing all the AUO screens are this way.
-
I suspect that this may be more of a problem with your specific problem rather than across the model.
If it is indeed across the model, that is either some horrendous quality control or notebook design..... -
I just purchased an a1 on Saturday, looked at my monitor hardware and it is an auo model. I have very very slight bleeding on the lower left (when the screen is blacked out) but have to really look for it to see. Looks like you need to take it back and get a new one.
Thankfully I purchased my at ABT (in the Chicago area) and they let me take it out of the box right there in the store, boot it up, check for dead pixels, sound, etc... if you're in that area, or if you're looking to buy online, I highly recommend them. -
mind taking a picture of it with a blank screen saver?
-
Guess I need to apologize. I had thought you meant when you hit the fn f7 key you were getting horrible bleeding. Mine is there, but not as bad, unless I turn up the screen brightness to it's highest level (this is on a black screen saver). Honestly, if you hadn't brought it up I would have never noticed it. So :shrugs: If they (Asus) states there is a problem and wants to give me a new one, fine, otherwise... I'm not sure if it bothers me or not.
-
I was wrong - I have the issue as well but I don't see it as a problem. The easiest way to see it - put the laptop in sleep (or hibernate, one of those modes) while it's plugged in. The screen will turn off but the blue lights stay on. Turn off the lights in your house or wherever you are and open the screen without exiting sleep mode. You can see through the screen the blue lights flashing (although it's not very bright to be honest). It's a non-issue to me.
-
I recently bought a g51vx also and my screen looked a lot like the OPs, very uneven brightness. It was a lot brighter and a bit washed out on the bottom half. I talked to asus and sent it in to them the other day.
They called today to tell me there was indeed a problem with my screen and that they are replacing it. So to the OP, if you haven't done it already, contact asus asap. I'll let you guys know how the new screen looks when I get my notebook back. -

Ive had my g51vx for a week now. I believe the screens just are this way. Its the design of the LCD. If it's displaying something bright it's very good but where dark's are concerned, I'm really having issues. I have found the best spot to view the screen is 4 feet away dead center (if its not a bright web page for example). Unfortunately. But other than those issues I really like it. I've compared the glossy shine LCD on my g51 verses my matte display on my 24" LCD and I actually like the g51 better.
I do have a problem on the upper right side. It seemed "pinched" and it's slightly darker when displaying something. Does anyone else have something like that because I'm wondering if I should contact Asus. -

The G51 1080p screens have bad viewing angles and thats why it looks like bleed. If you position the screen differently, it all looks gray (that's when you know it's the correct angle). The blacks aren't that great as is the case with a lot of LED laptops.
