Hi all,
Attached is the picture of my Asus A1 connected w/ my HDTV thru HDMI. I've just turned it on after work today, and the laptop screen turns out to be like this in the attached picture. However, the laptop's desktop still shows properly on my HDTV (if I choose to display simultaneously, both on laptop screen and HDTV). Is something wrong with my laptop screen (hardware???) ??? Or does this relate to software issue(s)??? Please help me w/ all your expertise. Thanks!
I'm running on Bios 206, and CCC 10.6
PS: Yes! I did try to shut down completely and turn it on 3-4 times. Still acting up like the pix!![]()

When you disconnect it from the HDTV what does the screen look like? With it still disconnected from the TV can you see the boot up sequence and enter setup? If not and the screen is still buggered you may have a display problem that will require a RMA.
Cheers, -
That's the PSOD bud, welcome to RMA land!
-
If disconnecting from the HDTV, the screen will display like the attached pix! It can only display properly on my HDTV
-
Omg that sucks
btw, that does the p stand for? -
It's the screen that is bad, nothing else is affected, that's why you can still output and display everything on your hdtv, you need to get your screen replaced to fix this. Look around there's a few threads discussing this issue.
-
this is the first time I heard of this issue. Now I'll be scared to connect mine to a external screen.
-
Thank you for replying to my thread. Man, luckily, I haven't update the vBios (ver. 3.0, I think). Otherwise, it would void my warranty, wouldn't it???

ThongDao, sorry for the bad luck just out of curiosity who did you buy it from?
I was hesitant to hook up to my sony TV 720I, , but it did work and I did not have to tweak any settings on the laptop. (Now I can watch Dexter reruns) -
I've got it from B&H. Man, I've only enjoyed it for 2 wks by now.
So, I've got this problem coz of connecting my laptop to an HDTV thru HDMI???
-
I realy wonder if anyone has tested theirs psod g73`s with other lcds just for proof that is lcd which strikes. Hell I dindt haved any problems with my
A2 so far but if I would get psod i will for sure test on lcd from my other laptop which is 15 inch just to get this clear. -
NO, you should be able to connect to a TV via HDMI, many in this forum are able to do this with the problem you are having.
This thread has some useful information about the issue you are having:

It seems that the screen on the laptop needs to be replaced. (as gstboy stated). If It was my computer I would boot into safe mode, run drive sweeper to remove all traces of the video driver, then go back to the original video driver from the DVD that came with the machine. If after you go back you still have the problem I would call the dealer or contact ASUS re: RMA. -
This my friend requires an RMA, before I bought this laptop I did extensive research, this happens when the LCD is not properly put on the laptop causing a Short Circuit which burns something on the LCD, at least thats what I dug up 2 months ago.
-
I think that completly Hannstar LCD issue. Have you seen any G73 user with LG-Philipps or AUO screen complaining to PSOD? European models of G73 are equipped with LG LCDs by some reason. Yes it could be short circuit, but in this case with so many PSOD occuring I think it's Hannstar LCD batch issue.
-
maybe caused by heat when laptop lid is closed while in use
-
that is known as a PSOD, happened to me, had my screen changed..
-
No, I don't think so. I've already used my G73 as a blue-ray player connecting to my 46" 1080P Samsung tv through HDMI a couple of times. During that time, the G73 screen looks fine, and is duplicated on the tv. I also regularly use the VGA port through a KVM switch to my desktop setup. I would be suspicious of the 10.6 Catalyst drivers though. I'm still using bone stock drivers on Catalyst, but I have upgraded the Main motherboard BIOS to 209.
-
I don't think so. I studied up on the cooling system of the G73, and even with the laptop cover down, nothing is obstructed, not even the little vents that are allegedly under the screen when it is up. Take your lappy, and hold it up to the light looking into it from the side. You will see that even closed, there is plenty of room for air to come into the keyboard, and there's a sort of tunnel that runs the length of the screen at its base. Plenty of room for air to enter for circulation. I use my lappy closed while it is on the KVM switch, and also while I'm playing blu-ray movies. There's never any heat build up. I think this whole fear of closing the lid on the G73's is a myth and an urban legend.

I'll try your recommendation when getting home today. Just being impatient here: I thought this issue is hardware related???
-
Not a chance. My laptop's lid is always open when running.
-
as far as i know its not heat related, just a random glitch or maybe screen manufacturing defect..
mine happened randomly when i alt-tabbed from the BFBC2 menu to desktop, and if u read the stories of other people who've faced the same problem there's no common factor.. -
common factor being resolution change from either 3d to desktop or when you plug in your hdmi to tv, or if you load a game for the first time and it defaults to a lower resolution.
what scares me is this possibly could be inherent of all these screens and eventually this will happen no matter what. hopefully not though. -
Same thine happened to me. I wasn't connected to any external display, just woke it back up and BAM! There it was. I had the laptop only a little over 1 week before it happened
I sent it in (RMA) and is has been sitting in CA waiting for parts....
Seems like a hardware problem as it manifests as soon as you power up and the external monitor output works fine. I hope they can provide a permanent fix. -
The Clevo W870 uses the Hannstar, and has no such issue.
-
When did u RMA your laptop, nwspike?? My A1 is only 1 week old. Now, I dunno if I should return it to B&H, or have it RMA by Asus.
-
Scares me too. Scares me a lot.
Hopefully the new vBIOS with lower voltages will help.
1 month and 26 days old my G73.
-
I think we have the exact same case here. My A1 connected to my HDTV all the time. It still worked fine the date before yesterday (PSOD happened y'day). I just came back home from work, turned it on like usual to enjoy 1hr or so of gaming, and there was PSOD. In addition, the laptop's had PSOD similar symptoms for a few seconds sporadically since day 1 (i.e. booting up, quitting from games, switching modes of display). Because it only flashed PSOD-like screen for few seconds and it worked fine afterward, I let go the bother.
-
I sent it in last week. The ASUS repair status site shows they received it last Thursday (6/24) and its "waiting for parts". I bought it from Newegg (what a hassle) and received it 6/10. It PSOD on 6/19. Not a very happy father's day for me. Its the first gaming rig that I have been able to dish out for. Its the most I've ever paid for a computer for myself and it does this to me. Ugh. Oh well.
-
If the PSOD issue also happen in BIOS then it's the hardware problem, the screen will need to be replace.
-
Thank you for your final words.
-
do lower voltage help keeps the screen from PSOD? if yes, i might try the vbios mode by ziddy...tnx
-
The thing is, you might just delay the inevitable by lowering the voltages. IOW, delay the problem until the notebook is out of warranty!
My gosh, Wat's going on with my G73JH-A1's screen??? Please help!!!
