I have an Asus g73sw and sometimes when i turn it on the screen is black and doesnt turn on. I can here it start up and i can log in and everything but the screen is just black.no flickering or anything. I recently installed nvidia driver 295.73 and i know that this started to happen some time after i installed them.

I cant figure out if its a hardware problem or if thedrivers are screwy. I used driver sweeper to unistall all the drivers in safemode and i thought it fixed it but this morning the screen wouldnt turn on. There is no consistency eather. some times it works all day then i turn it off and dont even pick it up, then the next morning the screen wont turn on. Sometimes i tap the bottom near the battery and it will turn on, but this too has no consistency and i cant tell if its a coincidence. Does anyone have any ideas or has anyone had the same problem. I want to knoe if i should send it to asus and i only have till the end of the month before my warranty is up.

You could try the new 296.10 drivers, but i'd seriously consider a RMA at this point.

How long does RMA take on average?

It is pretty variable. Every time i had to RMA something to Asus in Canada (From Montreal, Qc to their service center in Markham, On) it took a total of 5 work days from the time fedex picked up the item and i got it back. However, others on this forum had to wait about a month. I always got my items back in the same condition in which they were shipped to Asus.

I believe those are drivers issues. I updated to those drivers and I have the same issues, tho my boot times are increased to 5 to 10 minutes. I can hear sound and everything else works, the problem is that the LCD panel takes a little bit longer to turn on.

Once Im in Windows with my LCD turned on I have no problems at all, which is a relief (I was having 2 or 3 lock ups daily and TDR issues about the nvidia kernel). Sleeping and hibernating works, and when I resume the laptop, the Panel takes a while to turn on aswell.

If I run in Safe Mode eveything works as it should, so that means hardware is all right.

If it is a driver issue, the Asus logo should show at POST and then the screen would stay blank.

Dang. I dont get the POST screen when it goes black. its just black. once the screen does start up, though, i dont have any problem and it stays on. but i guess if i dont get the asus logo its a hardware problem?

If you don't have the Asus logo, then yes it is more likely that it is a hardware problem. The driver has yet to load at POST.

well i just did a clean driver install and updated to 260.10...but i have a feeling it will do no good and ill have to send it. Im just hesitant because i just got the internet after 3 years of not having it and now i have to send my laptop :( oh well.

one last question. is there any reason that the screen wouldnt turn on post thats NOT a hardware issue?

I didnt say like that, I just told that can be because the thermal pads are melted.

If this happens while booting fresh (not waking from sleep mode), hen it has nothing to do with software and drivers and is definitely a hardware issue. Do an RMA before the warranty runs out, because there's a very good chance the issue will arise again.

Ok so its doing it again and im pretty positive its a hardware problem too now. I also found out i have another month on my warranty. Ive done a billion test in hopes that this was a driver or software problem but its not. so to anyone who has a similar problem (no screen at POST) there is nothing you can do...just get it repaired

If Asus can't pinpoint the problem, they'll take the machine gun approach and replace the lcd, the GPU and the LVDS cable. You will get a sheet detailing what they did when you get your unit back from RMA.
