Hey guys, it's been some time since I posted anything on here. Nice to see that the G73JH is still alive and well and from I just saw someone managed to install a 770m on it, congrats.

Wanted to get some opinions. It appears my motherboard might be crapping out. Boot devices on Boot Select Screen show up as unknown, mouse and keyboard stop working at random even with restarts while occasionally, USB devices will receive no power and unplugging them and re plugging them back in would hard freeze the computer or cause a reboot.

So far this computer has received the following upgrades. 920XM CPU clocked at 3.3ghz, 7970m and a 240w Dell PSU. I've yet to install a 1920x1080 screen, this was going to be my last and final upgrade.

I went on Ebay and saw that the boards are going for about 160 bucks. Do you guys think it's worth the money plus time to put it back together? If I get the board I would have to reinstall the modded bios on it, thread should still be around somewhere.

Here are some pics of my 7970m mod.

That call is really up to you and how long it would take, it's still pretty relevant performance wise.

Sorry to hear about problems F9zSlavik.
From your post looks like your southbridge is either failing or needs reballing.

Didn't know why I didn't think of that. I can't reball it cause I don't have a replacement south bridge however I did a simple reflow. Twice just to be sure. Sure enough, it started working again xD
AND, my friend had bought a 1080 screen for his friend's laptop but was not compatible but it was compadible with mine yay! It's not the original branded LCD it's just a "compatible" version but still, it's free lol.

Happy to read my post helped you in some way :)

Btw I am the one that managed to upgrade g73jh to 770m and for that matter are pretty sure it would even be possible to upgrade old veteran to maxwell mobile gpu's.

Yeah and thanks! I forgot about reflow fix lol. It sorta fixed it I think not 100 percent sure yet. It has frozen a few times but that could be as a result from a bad clone. I went from 128 SSD to 180 ssd.
That is pretty insane mod. My soldering skills are prtty bad and looking at the 770m, it has so much less chips in it comprare to a 7970m I mean off the back it looks like it doesn't produce a whole lot of heat. My 7970m is always running hot. I would rather have a 770m than a 7970m

It is not so easy as with 7970m on g73jh. You will get black screen until windows loads up with video driver installed and fans at full blast and thats only after you get vbios from asus 770m installed first. To get 770m to work properly on g73jh one need to combine bios of the g73jw together with original bios.

First time I have seen the south bridge have solder issues, it may be worth putting a small heatsink on it if you have space to help reduce the thermal stress on it.

Me to but out from symptoms described in his post it was obvious that it may be soutbridge. It may have something to do with 7970m being much hotter than 460m.

It is directly below the GPU on the other side of the motherboard PCB so you may be right.
