Great machine. I used to have a G73...but unlike many, didn't have any issues.

The G53 I have now runs like a dream. Great screen, keyboard is responsive...video card runs well with all the new Nvidia drivers.

Consider this a thumbs up from me.

Congrats! I hear the 3DE screen is even nicer than the one that comes with the earlier G53's....will look forward to your report.

The G53 is a great but lo-res screen... its 120hz so it can do 3d but its 1368-768 (or close to that, cant remember exactly) instead of 1920x1080 on the A1/A3, XT, XN models.

I too considered the G53JW recently, but what turned me away were the reviews on the relatively poor quality of its 1080p screen. The G53JW has the same screen as the N53JF (the AU Optronics B156HW1 v5 -- also called the AUO15ED). The reviews mentioned poor black levels, poor contrast, and poor viewing angles. P.S. AUO makes some great 1080p screens for 15.6" notebooks--such as the AUO11ED and AUO14ED. It's just that the one ASUS uses in its notebooks seems to have the lowest quality of the batch. Here's a thread for more info on these screens:

Well, turns out I was shipped a G53JW-A1 instead of the 3DE. After checking, it was originally ordered as an A1, so bad on my part.

As for the screen panel, yeah, the viewing angles aren't the greatest. You need to be spot on to get the best viewing. However, once calibrated, the sharpness and such is quite nice, as long as your head doesn't bobble about. :)

I noticed the screen has the same blue-skew as the Hannstar 1080p panel, and the calibration settings are similar.

However, it's so cute! After being on several 17" laptops, it's actually nice having a smaller unit. Plus the Asus logo lights up on the backside. I like having the LAN port on the right side. Why they don't give a BR reader drive is puzzling, since it has 1080p. Oh well. I also find that it's more sensitive to having the bottom-side covered. Idle GPU temps rise roughly 5C, unlike the G73's, so a laptop cooler is more useful on this unit.

The carry bag that came with it is righteous!
