Hello Asus g-Series owners,
I have been browsing these forums for a bit now and finally decided to ask for help. I have a G73, and been trying to get it hooked up to my Onkyo receiver. I've had it for a while, and If I remember correctly, it's the Onkyo HT S5100.
Finally figured out how to enable my HDMI Digital Audio out from reading these forums, so now I have video and audio feeding to my TV. When I tried using the headphone jack, I get an insane amount of static and other noises. I tried my wife's laptop and got the same sounds, so I'm guessing my mickey-moused wiring to the receiver was the culprit.
So I've got a wire going out from the headphone jack, into a splitter that goes out to red and white which then go into the Auxilery port of my receiver. What do you guys use to get surround sound hooked up to your G73. And I'm not looking for headphones.![]()
The only reason I'm not going HMDI to the reciever is that the Onkyo only does HDMI pass through, and I dont think it does video AND audio.
Would love to get some suggestions so I can take advantage of my home theater.
Thanks!![]()

That's unfortunate that the receiver only passes the HDMI signal through to the TV. I have an Onkyo receiver and I didn't realize that they "gimped" their HTiB receivers this way.
My recommendation would be to set the digital output in your sound settings to the S/PDIF out rather than the HDMI out, since the HDMI out is doing you no good. The S/PDIF output is actually an optical output collocated with the headphone jack (there is an optical emitter within the same jack). Then, use a cable like this to make the connection to the Onkyo. Within the Onkyo settings, make sure that whichever optical input you connect your laptop to is assigned to the same source the HDMI input is assigned to.
Now, I can't confirm that this will give you full surround sound in movies and games - I can only confirm that it will give you digital audio in stereo, at minimum. Back when I tried this a few years ago, Dolby did not allow "on the fly encoding" so games did not output over optical in surround sound. Someone else would have to weigh in to tell you if it will work.
Need tips on best way to hook up G73 to Onkyo Reciever
