CPU on new Gentech G73SW run 95 degrees / 203 farenheit while in bios

Got my new laptop Friday (see signature), been testing it in the weekend. CPU seems to get warm easily.

    Did the following experiment:

Left it turned off on a wooden floor for 4 hours. Air: 25c/78f, floor: 25c/78f, laptop surface: 27/82

Turned it on and went straight to CPUID
    Core0/Core1/Core2/Core3 = 42/40/38/38 + 114/104/104/104

Opened a browser end went to a tabloid newspaper and clicked a new article every 10 seconds for 2 minutes:
    Core0/Core1/Core2/Core3 = 60/55/52/53 + 167/256/156/156 (temperature of air from vents: left: room, right: 33/92)

Went to youtube and played a 720p video full screen for 3 minutes:
Core0/Core1/Core2/Core3 = 75/69/69/69 + 167/156/156/159 – At this point airflow from the vents is very weak and temp of right vent is still 33/92

    Passmark burintest 90 seconds
    Core0/Core1/Core2/Core3 = (average) 90/99/99/99 + 210/210/210/210
GPU is around 42 42/107 the whole time with GPU fan speed around 2100. Reading for fan speed not present in hwinfo64 or any other program.

(I was thinking perhaps it was the vertex 3 that somehow spoiled the power management / fans. So I set the 500gb sata 2 drive in port 1 and tried to make a clean install on it. For some reason I cant when I install from external dvd. Says it needs a driver for the external dvd in install process (although it can easily read the drive). Searching on inf in windows in present install there is a green bar but no hd activity.)

Anyway playing such around in bios trying to make a clean install on second drive – when I returned to the original install right after and checked cpu temperature – core 0 was 95 degrees / 203 farenheit after just by playing around in the bios.

I suppose just going in bios + trying to install windows shouldn’t bring CPU to almost 95 degrees / 203 farenheit ???

I don’t know if it is a bad diamond paste or fan problems? The airflow from the exhausts seems pretty weak almost non existent even at 100 degres / 210 fahrenheit. Perhaps fans are not running as they should?

When I first decided to buy this laptop I was looking at the review at Notebookcheck http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-G73SW-Notebook.45917.0.html: core0 idle = 24c/75f, full load 56c/132f !!!

So either the numbers from notebookcheck are totally unrealistic or is there something fundamentally wrong with this laptop ?

    Any comments ideas much appreciated...

You need to reapply the thermal paste. This is a well-known problem.

You should speak with people from gentech asap before you fry the cpu. anything near 100'C is deadzone. Something is definitely wrong with your laptop. That or if you're lucky, something's wrong with the temperature sensors.

I have contated them, just haven't got an answer yet, since it is Sunday.

Yes, I shut it down immediately everytime temperature got high (already packed it away, not going to experiment with it anymore).

The CPU is not fried because everything is workeing perfectly, no freezeups, software is running perfectly etc., it just gets hot. Don't think it is sensors only though, since it gets much hotter on surface than they measured under full load in the notebookcheck review.

T junction is 105oC and the CPU will throttle once it reaches or goes above that point so you dont need to worry at the moment just dont stress it.

Sounds like a bad thermal paste/unseated heatsink/bad application.

Send it back to Gentech as its brand new.

Tjunction is 100°C for the 2720QM.

Anyway, since it's a new system let them fix it. I guess the warranty would be void since there's usually a sticker on the CPU heatsink which needs to be removed to access the CPU.

The fans should be quite audible at those temps, if the fans aren't running fast and pushing a lot of air that is a problem.

Upgraded laptops from authorized resellers like gentech are still under the same 2-3yr Asus warranty but in this case gentech should provide the tech support since the issue is most likely due to having the upgrades done.

But most definitely, i would not even bother messing with it and wait to hear back from them.

It's one thing if it's just a silly driver software issue but a hardware as essential as the cpu, i would be troubled from the possible consequences.

I just hope you don't go rambo inside the case. :p from what i know, you have to open up both the bottom panel and the keyboard and touchpad panel to be able to access the cpu fans.

I can assure you, I am not going to touch that case. There is a 20 min long speeded up video on YouTube with some technicians spending an hour getting to the CPU. That is just plain insane how complicated it is to dismount this machine :p

Since I am going to pay for sending it back anyway, I already asked for a refund because of other reasons also (screen does not bend backwards long enough, because I am using it lying down with it on my legs bent most of the time, because I have a back injury). So I am going for the g74sx which has a screen that bends further back. It will then cost me a fee of 15% of purchaing price to get a refund, because it is costum built, but thats just how it is. At least they have that option in their terms and conditions.

GenTech is very good at getting back to customers with haste, but since it's Sunday, you'll most definitely be getting a response tomorrow (just remember, they're in PST time zone).

Sorry to hear about your issue, but I'm absolutely certain they'll help you tomorrow. I had a 3D issue and Ken spent 45 minutes over the phone with me in order to resolve it and it was a success. Very good people at GenTech :)

Its not -that- bad, unless there is a significant difference in the SX. I can have my JH stripped down to the motherboard in about 5 minutes.

Yeah the bloke in that video also manages to bend the keyboard in an instructive video and say ''well fix that later'' about doing it.

I wouldn't say 5 mins to get the mobo and everything out unless your rushing but after the first couple of times I can have a complete respaste done in under 30 minutes.

Sorry I got home late today and just saw your email and already replied.

I am not sure why CPU running this hot on this unit since this is the first time I've seen on G73SW, could be a faulty fan on this particular unit.

We will take care of the problem or refund for you.
