I love my Asus G1S to death but it's on its last legs and I'm looking to upgrade. Any recommendations for a good gaming laptop around 15 inches and around 1,500 dollars? My friend has a G73 and I would really like to stay with Asus but I hate the form factor the G73 and the G53 has. Does anybody know when the next gaming line comes out from Asus because i might just wait for the new ones to come out. Thanks for the help

I would PM the various vendors here to find out. The G74 is the next gaming venue, with the new keyboard layout.

The G74 succeeds the G73. And it looks like a sleeker, better spaced G73. Still very G73ish though. Probably more garish.

To be honest, you should be concerned about reliability then performance. After reading the horror stories with the G73s on this forum than confirming with the reviews on Newegg I am not sure a Asus is as reliable with it's ROG notebooks anymore.

If you don't like the G73 form factor you are kinda out of luck, the g74 is even more aggressive IMHO. Sager/Clevo looks pretty subdued, to the point of boredom I think. For $1500 you should be able to get an outstanding laptop though. The G53SW-XN1 at newegg.com is hard to beat for the price. $50 more gets you a 17" G73SW-xn1. Then spend the last $200 on an SSD and you'll have a great laptop. But there are other sandy bridge GTX460 combos to be had for $1200ish also.

You're not getting a very big upgrade with the next gen of graphics cards.

We really do not know that yet since no reports on its OC ability.

Most of the people on the forums are either enthusiasts or the ones having problems. Since the new vBios, my experience with my G73JH has been very good and it withstood a year of being carried with me at university every day.

I didn't really see many horror stories with the G73SW and most of the problems were the same, momentus XT firmware for example.

Thanks for the help all. The G53SW-XN1 does look pretty tempting on newegg for only $1,200 and i guess for that price I could deal with the form factor. I've seen some reports on the G74 but are they coming out with a new 15 inch model as well? I think I'd probably just wait to get that if it were to come out soon. I'm not sure if I'd want to go with a 17 inch as my 15 inch is already pretty unwieldy when i travel.

There will be a new G53SX with the 560m too. Same body as the previous G53.

Hopefully the G74 won't be plagued with touchpad problems like some G73's have/had.

Did they ever figure the G73's touchpad out?

There was a BIOS, ATK, and synaptics driver update that seems to have mostly solved it, but some people are still having issues with the touchpad. There are some workarounds, like removing the foil around the touchpad or sticking a wedge under it. There are a few threads linked from the sticky if you care to read them.

I'm glad they resolved that problem. I tried to hangon for a fix but decided to go with another manufacturer.
