Hi all,
I have always tried to be far from OC techniques, but now I would like to try some OC in the 5870m. My first run at 800/1100 gave artifacts all over the screen in many games, and reading here and elsewhere, the right OC setting depends exclusively in the VGA card that you own and can not be replicated in other. Yesterday night, I tried 725/1050 and Crysis run perfect with no artifact whatsoever and no significant increase of temps in both my laptop and my laps...![]()
My questions are now theorical; in which component OC' I will obtain more performance? OCing either the gpu or the mems? Also, which one is more safe to keep OC. In my reading found the memory seems to be designed to render 1200mhz. But since is a notebook, the design should de slight different. How can I identified which of both is actually giving me artifacts? When in the heck Gary will give us an update....ehh wait, this question is for another thread....

The core gives you more of a performance benefit than the memory on this card. The memory is already super fast vs the core considering the equivalent card I like to compare to is the desktop 4870 which was 750/900.. So with the memory already at 1000mhz, the core needs to catch up. This is from personal viewpoint not hard fact.
I can only go as high as 740/1040 on this GPU without artifacts. my first one did 780/1080 and others on here blow past the 800/1100 mark.
Some chips just clock better than others. -
Also, there are any rule to set the new clocks? I mean, both must finish in zero, or both must be multiple of 5, or las two digits must be identical (as your example IM0001)... just looking the equilibrium between performance, stability and safety.
-
Na you can mix and match a bit. (others do) but I like to keep things in sync so to speak.
if you can get 725/1080 than go right ahead. -
If you use the CCC overdrive to OC should you run the utility that basicly tells you what to use and stick with it?
-
If you mean CCC Auto-Tune ... its not reliable, at least in my experience. It set my 5870m to 865/1150, which crashed furmark in under 5 minutes.

(tell us your secret)
-
Heh, if I knew the secret I'd let you know, but I can tell you that I ran Prime95 for 9hrs on it last night with no issues thus far. Still in the process of trying to find the highest stable OC for the 5870m though.

But I could be completely wrong and just have a bad overclocking system altogether lol. -
Just a little report:
Yesterday night i bump my clocks to 740/1050 and play Crysis for two hours. My laps reports no significant temps increase and Crysis displayed no artifacts with everything at custom (high-ultra) at 1080p (via mod to increase performance).
Regardless the touchpad problem (yes, i'm insistent) this piece of harware is awesome.
And 10.9a rocks (3GB/s-3GB/s in PCI-E benchs). -
Excuse me but what do you mean by "via mod to increase performance"?? -
Nekki would you post your autoexec file for high-ultra performance please. If is that way you are modded game. Thanks
-
Is SetFSB the only overclocking tool for the CPU? If so, do you really have to donate to get the G73 version?
-
My setting for oc are 760/1050 and increasing. I'm doing small steps just because i have artifacts at 800/1100.I I'm not using TwinTurbo (SetFSB use the very same technique, but you have more freedom to go higher) -
Just done some testing with Crossfire 5870m in an M17x R2 AW system. Used MultiGPU Furmark as a bench.
Clocks are 800/1100
Min FPS - 24
Max - 61
Avg = 35
Temps:
GPU0 = 120-128 C
GPU1 = 113 - 120 C
Will try some games like crysis -
Hey, can anyone with the 460M tell me about the OC headroom in that card? -
-
or is a limit established by asus? -
114C was the recommended shutdown temp put forth by AMD.
-
Gonna try stock clocks and see temps on those
Stocks temps for 700/1000 were 100-105'C
800/1000 temps were 105-110'C and with it a notable performance boost. The point of raising the Mem clock was pointless because it made no performance increase. At least in furmark. Crysis ran well.
Also, about the Xconfig mod - Does it auto apply itself? I have the steam version of Crysis and was wondering how you can tell if it is working or not.
On a side note, might experiement more with the core clock seeing as that yields the best results. -
Aight did it again and max reported temps were 100'C which seemed pretty normal considering I have using this lappy none stop for games for about 2 months (ish) Was considering get a Cooler for it like the Antec 200
What temps are you guys getting? -
I range about 66-72C depending on ambient temps in games. Furmark hits 77C.
-
The usual temp I get is 100'C :/ Never had lower and Furmark gives me 100'C
Just played a solid session of crysis with 800/1000 and Crysis reacted very well to the OC. -
Hey guys some how i stumbled across this thread via a search in google.
I have a full write up on a Repaste on 5870M Crossfire in my Alienware M17X
I got a 31C drop at load just by doing some mods. Tuniq TX-4 and a retention clip mod. Hopefully this will help you guys on your laptops. Im sure there are mods you can do.
My 5870 temps are very very low. i have both overclocked at 880/1100 at 1.12volts and 100% stable. I can go much higher but no need to at the moment. To much power for any game right now :0

The most I can get out of mine is 825/1125 before lockups/artifacts.
