My friend is wanting to get a gaming capable laptop after seeing how well the G73 performs, but really doesn't like how it looks cosmetically (I like it though!). Gaming performance wise, what laptop (guess it doesn't have to be Asus), would you consider the next "step up"? Nothing crazy expensive, maybe $2,000ish and below (yes, I realize the performance of the G73 is hard to beat for the price). Thanks!

Or Segar have some neat customizable ones for equivalent pricing from a few vendors.

Sager NP8850 - XOTIC PC - (Built on Clevo W880CU) Gaming Laptop

I might consider this Sagar with a Nvidia 480m. It would probably be around $2k with a proper CPU.

In the equal but different design category, I might look at the MSI GX660R
    MSI GX660R-060US
It's a lot like the G73JH but it has USB 3.0, eSATA, firewire, express card slot and such.

I only own the G73. I'm just speaking from a spec standpoint that these are two I would look at if I were shopping right now. The notebookreview.com forums for those two models would help you figure out quickly if either has some sort of massive problems.
