I have an Asus G55VW hooked up to an external Asus monitor for home use. When I try to hook the laptop to the monitor through HDMI the sound doesn't work When I use a DVI-HDMI connection everything works. Its not a major problem but I was wondering what would cause this.

Does the external monitor have integrated speakers?
If you have creative installed open creative audio center and make sure laptop speakers are selected, if no creative check the settings in control panel - sound. -
No the monitor doesn't have speakers.

I had the same problem and it has to do with the audio controller in the monitor. The monitor i have looks like it has speakers and it has the input for sound and it even has the audio output to it when it has an hdmi connection. Though the monitor doesn't have any speakers.
My monitor is an asus vs228h-p, you can google it to check out the specs (the one with speakers that's identical in looks and price is ve228h). I don't know why asus decided to design it with a sound input jack if there's no speakers inside the monitor. Anyway all you have to do is go into the control panel to sound preferences and make sure your laptop speakers are still the default. When you plug in hdmi it will try to pair the audio with the device, and if you use vga or dvi it will only output a video signal so your sound will work.
So change up your sound preferences and let me know if that solved your issue. -

You need to run a 3.5mm jack from the laptop to the monitor too I think, it does not support audio over HDMI by the sounds of things.
No sound with HDMI connection
