Apologies for the noobish question that I'm about to ask but I was wondering is there anyway I could take the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M out of my friends broken G71GX and replace the 9700 in my G50V?

No harm in a an honest question. I would rate this as highly unlikely/borderline impossible...but perhaps one of the Inspector Gadget types around here has figured out how.

More than likely you're dealing with different form factors/voltages, etc.

thanks for the reply, it would be awesome if it could work but something tells me it would be too good to be true. Do you think a smaller upgrade would be worth it?, such as the NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GS which is in the g50v a1.

I agree. Too good to be true. As for the 9700 to 9800M swap, also think you're dealing with an unworkable situation. Not sure about your specific laptop, but a lot of machines in that generation had video cards that were not removable (without some real electrical gymnastics)...and even if you could, the difference between those two cards in real world experience wouldn't be worth the trouble.

I realize if your friend has a dead G71, you're looking at a potential free video card...but you're probably better off finding a good refurb deal on a cheap G72 or G60 if you want a performance upgrade.
