Review: Asus G73JW Notebook (GTX 460M) - Notebookcheck.net Reviews
I love Notebookcheck.net's reviews because they are scientific and objective, with lots of data. The most notable thing from this review to me is that the G73JW is indeed cooler than the G73JH. But how did they accomplish that?
Well, the answer to that is in the fan noise data.
G73JH:
Idle: 34.2 / 34.2 / 35.2 (Min/Avg/Max)
HDD: 34.2 (Avg)
DVD: 40.5 / 49.4 (Avg)
Load: 39.3 / 41.3 (Min/Max)
Average Temperature: 37.1 - 37.4
G73JW:
Idle: 33.5 / 33.5 / 34.3 (Min/Avg/Max)
HDD: 34.1 (Avg)
DVD: 37.0 (Avg)
Load: 41.5 / 44.8 (Min/Max)
Average Temperature: 30.2 - 32.9
So clearly, they improved the cooling by revving up the fans. So you get an overall more stable system at the expense of a bit more noise. This is definitely data that should be of interest to anyone who is trying to decide between the G73JH-B1 and the G73JW-A1 models.

How come they said that the average temp of G73 is 34c which is not true? We're idling at 60c+ or lower through repasting, and temp at load is 70 - 80c+?
-
They are talking about external temperatures (i.e. palmrest etc.) while you are talking about internal temperatures. They have a separate graph that refers to internal temperatures for GPU and CPU.
-
Isn't it obvious? They must have taken these temps in the freezer!
-
no on iceland
-
The model they test has one single button touchpad.
And I would like to see a test comparing how drops performance with physics on/off vs our 5870m. Seems to be (compared to desktop) the only way to have a decent physics performance is with a second vga dedicated to physics. -
AAHHHH!!! Now I get it. thanks
hahaha...yeah they took the temp inside the freezer wahahaha...thank you.
Most of the time if they turn on the Physics Option the performance drops / some part of the game lags even at high end rig. -
Your logic makes no sense to me, can you please explain how the JW is more stable than the JH?
-
Maybe because he thinks that Nvidia doesn't have GSOD like HD 5870?...Dunno.
Oh look the reviewer said:
Now, whether to choose a model with Radeon HD 5870 or with GeForce GTX 460M, is a question of personal preferences. Those looking for relatively unrestricted (gaming) performance are better off with the G73JH (HD 5870). For users that, however, want supported features like PhysX, the G73JW (GTX 460M) might be a better match. -
does anyone see those latency spikes? that's just crazy!
-
Another review with old drivers..
-
Seams they STILL havent solved the issues with the touchpad/Synaptics drivers even on the newer JW. This is just sad.
And Twin Turbo still remains just a useless marketing gimmick. -
In my system, the latency is always at minimum under 500 u(micro)s. Seems to be an specific Jw problem.
-
What I don't get is, here you clearly have a GPU capable of optimus, but the option has been left unimplemented by Asus. :|
-
... but they don't have an IGP here, so how could you implement optimus? Also, I think I'd just as soon stay with my JH if that latency is any indication...
-
I hope they keep it as far away as humanly possible. I don't want two GPUs let alone Optimus, clogging up my system and creating unnecessary driver and compatibility issues.
-
By stable I just meant that a cooler system should have a greater chance of longevity in the long run. Less chance of hardware failure.
