I have a G75VW, and had downloaded a couple of desktop themes from the ASUS ROG forum. I am running Win8, and like an idiot, I tried to install a theme meant for Windows 7. Got a flash of a message about incompatibility. Before l could even finish reading it, the screen went black (still lit up, just all black). Could see and move the mouse pointer, but couldn't see anything to click on. Finally shut it down by holding the power button. When I reboot it, it goes to the login screen as usual. But when I log in, the screen goes all black again. It is definitely booting into windows and is apparently running normally otherwise, because if I hit ctrl+alt+delete, task manager window appears and looks normal.
Can anyone help me fix this?

Have you tried shift + F8 to boot into recovery/safe mode?

    See this link

    Good luck :)

Yes, and it just seems to go to the login screen. Question: Do I mash f8 a zillion times while holding down shift, or just hold them both down. By the way, thanks for the fast reply. :)

EDIT: Finally got it to work. Thanks again.

Thanks, me too! I was freaking out, LOL. I think the reason I couldn't get into recovery/safe mode (according to what I read) was because only having two hands, I couldn't move my one hand from the power button to mash the f8 key fast enough (because these things boot so quickly) while holding down the shift key at the same time. Finally took a folded business card and wedged it to hold down the shift key, and started pounding f8 before I even hit the power button. Worked the first time. Thanks again for your help! :)

Yeah no probs it's ridiculous how windows 8 makes everything we learnt and simplified in the past much more complicated today. Two button entry into safe /recovery mode is ridiculous in 2013 but hopefully your folded business card will help someone else. It's like we need 4 hands to work our computers ridiculous isn't it?
No start menu metro two key boot into recovery, I hope Microsoft fixes the next OS on windows 7 logic.

I'm obviously no computer or OS expert, but I think Win8 is a hot mess. I liked Vista better!

FWIW, I downloaded and installed StartIsBack within about an hour of getting this thing just to avoid those damn tiles and get my start button/menu back, LOL.

Lol, under the hood it is better in many ways but yes the metro GUI is garbage and there are a couple of other questionable changes mostly related to UEFI.

Sometimes it can take more than you would think and sometimes less than you would think to kill a computer.
